Losing my mind....and bank balance. - 10/01/19 02:16 AM
Well , I got the Dart to a track for a test day finally.
I learned a lot.
Of stuff I didn't want to learn.
Some guys can get drag radials to work , but I am coming to believe that I am not one of them.
Traction was an issue.
First trip , I left off the two step , set for 3100.
Conservative.
It spun through second and into third...........I was thinking it would resemble a 1960's funny car , but it did finally grab in third.
Only to nose over at about 1000 feet , with zero on the fuel pressure gauge.
1.99 60 ' , 8.073 1/8th at 97.48 and a 12.068 @ 123.07 m.p.h.
Coasting.
It wouldn't build any fuel pressure and I thought maybe the vent was plugged ???
Creating a vacuum ?
I wasn't sure , but I have the vent plumbed into the fill neck by the cap , so I disconnected the line and taped it on to a tube for the roll cage that is in the trunk.
Hit the switch and the gauge popped right up to 6 1/2 p.s.i. , where I set it to.
O.K. , let's give that a try.
This time , I left off idle , but matted it instead of easing into it.
1.85 60 ' , and spinning hard again.........into second , and I short shifted it to try and get it to behave.
Into third and I lifted as I clicked and eased into it.
It felt like it was eating real estate pretty good , again to about 1000 feet and it fell flat on it's face again........even harder than pass # 1.
7.56 1/8th @ 97.86
11.603 @ 115 at the stripe.
Zero fuel pressure on the gauge again.
Tank with sump , filter ( a new one ) , pump and -8 line to carb , then past it to a BG bypass regulator and -10 return to the tank.
I am thinking the pump is weak and having a tough time pushing the fuel forward maybe ?
But it worked O.K. during all of the shenanigans / testing on the street in the last couple months.
I had 295 - 65 X 15's on the back........E.T. Street R's , but they rubbed so I pulled them off.
Went to 275 - 50 X 15's .........same tire.
The biggun's wanted to hook it seemed , but I wasn't going to risk carving them up to get a decent time slip.
And I probably should have gone to a 275 - 60 instead of a 50 , but I was hoping to improve things ratio wise and make the 3.91's in the rear think they were 4.86's or so.
This is with Cal Tracs and mono's. , set to just touching. Rancho 9 ways on 6 , AlterKtion front end and single adjustable QA 1's on 7.
I ordered an Aeromotive 3000 pump and filter , new fuel line and a pair of Hoosier 10.5 X 28 radial slicks.
I know the fuel line is old , and have seen them fail internally and behave like a check valve.
I don't know if that is going on here , but I am not taking any chances.
We have three more test days on the schedule for this season and I really want to get it figured out before the snow flies.
The car is making nice power when it is getting fuel , and I think I threw a big enough check at that to fix it.
Getting it to the ground is the tough one to figure.
