Stroker piston Guru's....383 Blower Pistons - 09/14/19 06:52 PM

Looking to build a 383 / 496 stroker with an F2 Procharger.....I am having trouble finding 4.280 pistons in an 8.5-9:1 compression range.

Now with a blower, my understanding is the top ring land needs to be further down the bore...which when combined with a stroker crank can be an issue....So we need to know can we do this with the 496 combo, or do we have to move down to the 470 combo....

Call your favorite piston manufacturer and custom order 10. The two extras will be needed later lmao

This sounds like all custom parts, rods, pistons and ring package, what stroke, which rod journal size and rod length are you wanting to use?
Why use the weak, thin main webbing 383 blocks? Why not use a 400 block to start with? work scope

Off the shelf piston, and F2 blower do not belong in the same sentence. Lol

I ran a probe forged race piston in my first turbo build short block.

The crown was simply not thick enough for the high cylinder pressure..it LITERALLY caved in the top of the piston.

I am assuming the pistons will be custom......

383 block

4.25 stroke x 4.28 bore with a 6.535 rod

up up
I had two 440 stick shift forged crankshafts offset ground to 3.91 stroke with BB Chevy rod journal sizes with B motor mains, one for my 1969 Dart GTS H code 4 speed car and the other for a 400 block I'll build later.
I bought two sets of BB Chevy type 7.100 long forged I beam rods from Speedway for both motors, neither one should make over 550 HP on pump gas, I think work
My first 400 pump gas 4.250 stroke stroker motor used a set of CAT 6.800 long BB Chevy H beam rods, Dan, Dram, called those pistons hockey pucks grin They where short and light weight up grin

Is this a race motor, gas or alky?

It will be raced mainly.....According to The Super Charger Store we will need 9:1 compression and, on pump gas, run 18psi of boost.....using water/meth injection with 2 jets...on set at 4psi and the other at 10psi....it will make north of 1000hp.....I have not seen anyone on here do this yet. They claim they do this all the time. I know of one Mopar that did similar, and it held up...

Cool, Whatever you choose, I'd for sure try to keep the rotating assy weight down. Lots of piston companies seem to recommend really heavy stuff for blown motors. I'd understand it if someone is trying to blow the crank out of the pan. I see near 800 gram pistons with 1" plus pins being sold for modest power apps too often. rotating/recip weight, and bad tunes are responsible for most of the busted stuff I see.

Now that is funny you say that.....I just had this discussion with 440Source.....Was going to buy their kit minus the pistons with the light weight crank option and balance everything at our shop....Its 6lbs lighter. I have one in my 400/512. They told me, the heavier crank would be better at surviving 1000hp than the lighter one......I am pretty good at tuning an NA setup, but I have never tuned a blow thru deal, so, If I pony up the $7k for an F2 kit, this will be a first for me....But I am looking forward to doing what it seesm the entire rest of the country has been doing for a decade.

High rotating weight is comparatively harmless (although is does reduce low gear acceleration).
Reciprocating weight is what breaks rods (and pulls pins out of piston), especially closing the throttle @ high RPM in the traps in which 14.7 lbs. per square inch of vacuum is added to the piston weight. With a 4.25" piston, that's 208 lbs. each...
The tension load on the rods varies directly as the reciprocating weight, but as the square of the RPM: 8,000 is not 14.3% greater than 7,000 (8 ÷ 7) but 30.6% greater (8^2 ÷ 7^2).

W/r/t "they do it all the time": where is the spark set?

I'd be careful with the chinezium stuff. Crank flex is a block buster too. Running a chinese crank over a thousand hp with a blower, I'd run some really wide bearing clearance on the mains. Like .004+

Always amazed at PS cranks. 37 pounds, small, narrow journals, 15 pounds of oil pressure, 1500hp, and the bearings look new.

Re: Stroker piston Guru's....383 Blower Pistons - 09/18/19 11:22 PM

Well it could be a grenade, hence a 383 block.....What is the point when the block is only good to 700hp according to most on here anyways? Ain't any of those available if I wanted one....This is more about pushing the limits with what is available vs being totally safe.....And still trying to go faster than I am currently....If we get a good tune and keep it happy, we will see. Not putting a $3500 crank in a $200 block....

First I have to find a piston manufacturer and lock in the stroke we can go with. Called Chris at The Super Charger Store, and he recommended Diamond and then Wiseco.....I will have to call...

For sure, i understand the reasoning behind running that crank. Seriously though, wide main clearance will go along way to keeping the block together with it. Diamond, and bill miller are top blower pistons in my mind.
