Mini tubbed, springs reloctaed, tire suggestions please: - 08/08/19 07:14 PM

As I complete the fabrication of my 68 Charger, I am figuring out how wide of a wheel I can go, along with how big of a tire.

So here is what I have: 68 Charger with tubs widened to the frame rails. Springs relocated to the frame rails as well.

I have not picked a rear end, so that width can be whatever I need.

Going to run 15" wheels, but do not have any idea how wide I can go with rim width and also how big of a tire can I run. I figure to ask some of you guys who have done these modifications and see what you are running. Pictures of your car are a bonus, nothing like seeing a fat tire mopar.

I would like my car to sit somewhere like this if possible ( I know I can't go to this extreme with a mini tub, but something close to this would be awesome) : Love the fat and tall look.

My advice would be to find the wheel you want, see what sizes are available, and same with tires.
A 12" wide wheel is pretty big, mine have 4.0" BS and the car runs 13x31s. Drag car.
Then, I'd suggest buying what you want and mocking up the rearend & etc around them.
A couple photos...

My 68 Charger has 15x10, 4 7/8 Back space,325-50-15 MT drag radials, stock width S60, Stock tubs & spring location, it is as large as you can go stock, it will rub the inside when pulling in my steep angle driveway, this should give you a reference with your inner tubs moved.

I have a mini tubbed '69 RR. The tubs have been widened 2 " so are about 3/4" shy of the frame rails. I have 16" from the inner tub to the wheel lip but of course the outer tub curves in towards the top. I figure any tire with a 14" cross section will be safe (maybe even 15"). The issue is finding the proper height tire - in my case I need a 28" or 28.5" tall tire to fit a 15" dia. wheel.. Any taller will rub the front wheel opening. There are a lot more tire choices if you want to step up to larger diameter wheels like 16 to 20 inches but I'm not after the "touring" look either.

Thank you for the information so far. You guys have some beautiful cars. If mine turns out like that I will be happy.

Yeah, I should add that anything taller than about 29" will rub the front of the wheel opening flange.
You can either pie-slice (to keep the flange) there, or cut it away, depending on how stock you want the area to look.
I did the pie-cut on another Duster and it bought me about 1.25". It would just take a 30" tire, but tight. Charger probably has more room.
Measure, measure, measure.
Spacing the rear axle back a bit can buy you some room, being that your springs are at the rails.

Do you happen to have a picture for reference? I am interested to see.

Thank you.

With my 68 Satellite I spaced the front spring hanger back 1/4" , plate , I can now run the MT PBR 29.5x10.5R15 which is 30"tall . I have a 15x10 , 5.5"BS stock spring and tub . Without the spacer a MT 296/65R15 (30.5") hooked the dogleg when i lifted in the lights

Here's the "other" Duster, tire is 275/60R15 28" tall, masking tape was cut line.
I cut it on the left (smaller) side of the tape.
Side pic after the cut isn't much help, but I included it anyway.

If you've already done the tubs, I'd scrap the leaf spring idea and go with a ladder bar/coil over set up. It's the best set up with factory frame rails and not much more work than what you have already done (you did the hard part).

Ultimately the easiest thing to do is to find the widest tire and wheel that will fit and then buy them first.

Your only real backspace considerations need to be what you will see from the outside...some like little backspace and a short rear...personally I like a rear that would be a little shorter than stock and then sticking with a near 50/50 wheel offset...maybe even more back space when using a wide wheel.

Depending on your wheel well opening 30" or so tall is the limit without modifying the 1/4's.

I run a 30" tall tire (275/60/17) on a 9.5" wheel with 5.5" of backspace on a stock wheel well on my 70 Satellite.

I have the leaf springs moved back 3/4"...I think the section width of the tire is about 11.75".

The springs are SS springs and I have the front hangers flipped upside down...I also installed a 1 1/2" lowering block between the spring and the rearend perch...

It is stuffed about as full as you can go without relocating the inner wheel houses and the springs.

Buy the wheels and tires you want...mock them up where they fit in the wheel well the best...

This will determine the width you will need for the rear...don't forget to figure in for rotor and/or drum thickness...

Then decide if you want to use leaf springs or go with a 3 link or something...

Ride height can be modified using leafs by installing the front perch up or down and also by using sliders at the rear instead of shackles...

This how mine sets with about 150#'s of stereo equipment in the trunk... twocents

This is mini tubbed to frame rails but with a parallel bar 4 link. Has 17 x 12 but I have enough room for a 13 easy. Tire is a MH 325/50/17 28 inch but I am going to a 390/40/17 29.5 12.5 tread width 14.30 section. I can use a 15 inch diam wheel if needed.
