best spot to pull vacum from on b1 motor

I have a 500 inch engine with b-1 original heads we currently are pulling vacum from the valley pan with a bung we welded in be I seem to be pulling oil out every run the valve covers are so low I dont know how that would work so if anybody has any ideas i would like to try something different thanks for any help Matt.

If you have a baffle in the valley tray, that is as good a place as any. The biggest problem I see people have is running more oil than the pan can hold. You should have drain backs into the block or pan from the heads, front and real. You should also have a good windage tray, not a screen to keep the crankshaft from dragging through the oil and causing crankcase pressure. How much oil are you getting in the puke tank and is it blowing out of the vent?

I'm having the same problem on my new 440-1 motor with Jesel paired shaft rockers with both pushrod oiling and spray bar oiling. I mounted the Moroso vacuum pickup fitting on top of the passenger side valve cover and added a baffle to help stop the excessive oil being pull into the puke tank, mine is pulling about 2-4 ounce per run. I have to drain the tank after 3 runs, if I don't it will start dripping out the puke tank push on breather
The same setup on the old motor last year would not do this hardly at all, mainly it would pull water condensation out of the same location with a different fitting That motor has a set of Harland Sharp single shaft rockers and no push rod oiling

The valve covers are always the best place to pull vacuum from but even then you have to make sure the baffles are in place.

Way to much oil in the valleyt to attempt to use it for pulling vacuum. Been there done that, baffle no baffles don't seem to matter. I have had good luck on my B1 stuff using one of two ways. First if the Star vacuum fitting in the CENTER of the valve cover on the intake side. The baffle fits just between the rockers there. The other is to use the Moroso breather/separator on the valve cover. We don't draw any oil with the breather and the dragster was pulling 10" at idle and 16 down track. My Cuda pulled 17-18 up top and would get a teaspoon per pass typically. The issue with a B1 is the lack of oi return to the pan, that canb leave a LOT of oil in the valve cover. If at all possible use as big a return line as you can, vacuum will inhibit that drainback even more. Sorry these are the best pictures I have available.

What valve covers do you have they look higher than the ones I help.

The dragster has B1 covers on it, not the old ones with "scalloped" corners but the new Indy style ones. The Cuda has Williams performance sheet metal overs.




Older B1 cover for reference, these also some in two hieghts this is the taller version. They do not make these any longer.

Nascar BB and Hemi's used both valve covers with separate metal tubing and separate breathers joined together. The lines were slightly uphill aiding in the oils movement with the ability of drain back. to the valve covers.

I had a customer who used a set up like that on his 1967 Nascar street clone car, it would allow a lot of condensation to get into the oil

Is possible, the VC opening and the first section of tube should be large and as close to vertical as you can - this reduces the air speed and allows droplets to fall back. After some distance the smaller tube is less important.

In know these aren't the prettiest things in the world, but I've yet to find anything that keeps the pump as dry as these. They are Z baffled and One will do, but run 2 and it doesn't matter where you put them, you'll get little to no oil. I run pushrod oiling, and spray bars on this motor to help keep the springs cool. There is a ton of oil up there fed by an RCD pump. With 2 of these baffles the only thing that comes out is humidity, no oil in the can.
