indy cylinder head valve cover breathers - 06/17/19 03:19 PM

these came not pre drilled and was wondering if anybody has installed the breathers on these valve covers? the baffles look like they would suck oil, and they told me to drill holes on the covers to mount the baffle plates? all the way through the valve covers, wouldn't they leak and look horrible. any pics of your motors with the breathers installed and maybe pcv on them. thanks moparts

I installed '70s Mopar type breathers, OEM Mopar breather grommets, and sheet metal baffles.
Baffles are held in place by 2 sst allen screws, double nuts, and locktite.
You could also weld the baffles in if you wanted.

They aren't the most installer-friendly parts I've ever seen... but once you get them all set up they seem 100% worth the effort.

did you have to drill holes all the way through the valve covers for the baffles?

I just use the blind gromit with a slice

Yes. I decided that the bolts wouldn't have enough thread engagement otherwise.

Not everyone would agree

I've drilled and tap the bosses for #6x32 screws (CRS the length, 1/4 to 1/2 inch confused) and used small flat washers under a piece of flat thin aluminum sheet with red Locktite without going through to the top up scope
I'm going to have a weld in baffle to stop my vacuum pump from sucking so much oil into the surge tank today on a set of cast aluminum valve covers that may be a set of no name Indy covers,I'm not sure where they came from though confused I used a Moroso vacuum pump fitting that has 3 sets of three 1/8 holes on the flats of the fitting facing the outside edge of the valve cover for the suction side, I'm really surprised on how much oil it being suck into the fitting into the GZ vacuum pump, probably around two to four ounces a 1/4 mile run shock
Hopefully the baffle will stop that oil from being sucked out of the motor luck

I fixed a set of valve covers/breathers/baffles for a friends engine with cast alum covers that turned out as well as could be expected. I used stainless steel, counter sunk phillips head, 10-32 machine screws, with lock nuts, drilled completely through valve cover. I put just a dab of sealer in the hole before installing screws. Looked good and didn't leak. I also used a small spacer between the baffle and the valve cover to be able to use a push in cap and rubber grommet. CAUTION: make sure you have enough clearance between baffle and rocker arms, BEFORE you drill and cut!!

Indy doesn't give a damn about appearances ... that should be obvious just looking at their crappy castings !!

You could use these, the baffle is in the base and a standard breather just slips in.

not if you don't put it over a rocker, keep it over the second stand hold down. front or back , I'm making the assumption also that you have a standard oiling set-up, not through pushrod.
