wheel rim screws holes too loose!

wheel rim screws holes too loose! - 06/06/19 10:06 PM

Just putting my new slicks on and several of the holes are too loose to reinstall the rim screws. I am using the summit kit which has .250 diameter /.75 long screws. I tried wrapping them with tape but they still won't bite.
Can I just install a next size screw in there? What to do??
Thanks mIke

I haven't screwed my slicks in years but I think Morosso or someone offered screws that were slightly over-sized for this.

Use more pressure when attempting to install the screws. They should screw into the tire, not the wheel. Screws that are threaded into the wheel tend to push the beads away from the wheel. My tires are screwed and tubeless.

Tried putting more pressure to install but does not seem to be working! Wondering what the next size screw is?
Any other ideas?

Through the screws away and use Permatex High Tack™Gasket Sealant Item # 80063
Been 1.240 60ft with tubes with this method. Tires haven't moved an inch in 91 passes

I run a 1/8" drill into the tire to make a pilot hole. Put a piece of steel tubing over the drill bit to stop the drill from going through the tire. Drill between the 2 steel bands running through the tire bead. The screw will then grab in between the bands and hold the tire to the rim.

Didn't know there were steel bands in slicks?
How far to drill into the bead?
Thanks Mike

If looks is not important then just move over and drill a new hole beside the ones that are bad, but if looks are important then disregard

Dartman that is what I was thinking also! That or finding 1/4 inch/3/4 screws that would go into the bad holes and rethread the holes for a tight fit. Do you think either one will it will affect the tire balance?
Thanks Mike

as mentioned before the Moroso screws seem to be a little meatier than a standard screw of the same claimed size,I know when I changed screws after several slick changes the holes were getting sloppy but not stripped out, bought the Moroso's and all was tight again,, one other thing you might look into would be try to find a metric screw that is slightly larger in diameter than the 1/4 screw,, as far as balance, I personally think it would be neglegable but if you know someone that has a bubble balancer you could check it before and after if for nothing more than piece of mind.

I only use good screws. Moroso, Jegs gr 8.The real trick I've found is cut some aluminium rivet nails 1/4"-3/16 long. Lay them in the hole and put the screws in with a light rechargeable impact . Dont over tighten them. This has worked well for me.

Will look into this also tomorrow when I go to the hardware store.

4 things

Use good screws. I only use the Morosos.

Replace the screws. Screwing into the bead dulls the point on the screws. Two uses and they are done.

Drill a small starter hole in the tire. 1/16, 3/32 maybe.

Lube the screw (JB80) and apply pressure while screwing them in.

5. Pump the slicks up to 18-20 pounds to push the beer against the wheel

6. Use so type of mechanical stop on the drill bit so you don’t drill through the slick. I always just wrapped black electrical tape around the drill bit for a stop and saved it for that specific job.

When you have a worn hole screwing slicks on I take a waste piece of aluminum from a aluminum pop rivet (the part that goes in the rivet gun) and cut it about 1/4" long, slip it in the hole and the screw will get traction again. Has saved me many times, much like using a toothpick in a wooden hole. Using an impact or pressure will just strip the aluminum out worse, take your time and use new screws if the one you have our dull, never have had to drill the tire???

Update!!!

I just returned from the hardware with some .25 pop rivets and some new metric screws. The screws that came with the kit measure .237 (after many uses) and the new screws measure .247. The new ones went right in and solved the problem. Anyone need some extra pop riverts?
Off to the races tonight!!
Thanks for all the reply's.

A plastic zip tie will tighten it right up. Slide the zip tie in the hole with the screw and use an electric impact or drill and they will go in just fine.

changed slicks several times, holes got worn out , get a flat pin punch bigger then hole, tap hole flat it will tighten up

I have used the Permatex high tack like DVW said with success. Decided to go all out and bead lock my wheels finally. The ease to now swith back and forth to and from my Drag Radials to slicks without the need for a tire machine is great.
