8 inch Torque Converters - 05/02/19 04:36 PM

Why do all these Converter Companies not want to sell you a 8 inch?
Everyone wants to sell you either a 9 or 9.5.
Need a new converter and everyone try's to talk me out of one.

Transmission Specialties has never tried taking me out of a 8 inch convertor. My last 3 have been spragless and I’ve been very happy with them. Ever without dyno numbers on my last convertor I told them I wanted 5800 stall and it ended up being 5760. Can’t beat that.

What one needs for a torque converter is def one of those “it depends” things.

It is application specific. Stall speed desired, power, stroke, gear, weight, intended use. With everything being big inch, big power, boosted, etc, these days, not many situations are right for that small converter.

I have been told good 8" cores are hard to find, and most new 8" converters are usings parts from ATI.
9.5 stuff is cheap for them to buy so easier to sell cheaper/or make more money.

I am buying another 8" right now

Originally most race converter company used the Opel 8 inch cores and built them for the tranny, engine and so on.
I've been told the 8 inch cores are no longer out there and not many company have any in stock to build them now confused
I've ran into the same thing in the last three years several times whiney shruggy
There is a HP limit on how well any small converter will work, the bigger the core the more power it will take before failing is what I'm being told once you get over 900 HP shruggy
For real high RPM stall, above 8500 RPM, A1 says their 7 inch is the hot set up work shruggy

I've got 2 8's that I got from Stock Eliminator guys. One is a PTC, the other is a TCI. Pretty sure PTC will build you one. I know Edge will, and they are using billet covers now.

I have an 8" in a 727 in a street car. It works but it's pretty stupid. Fun though! I'm willing to sell it. Kevin at Hughes went through it. I originally got it from Marv at A-1.

As has been mentioned, the 9-9.5" cores are plentiful and that's why they'll push you toward them.

2- Glide 8” convertors with Turbo inputs one is 67-6800 the other 7000.

1- 904 8” Transbrake convertor 7100-7200 stall

All of them are basically brand new with less than 15- 1/8 mile passes.

Asking for 800.00 plus shipping each.

I run an 8" on the street, it flashes 6400 behind my 416 and it drives well on the street. It is a turbo action that is rated at 4800.

Re: 8 inch Torque Converters - 05/03/19 03:27 PM

All depends on torque input and desired stall speed. With my combo the 9 1/2 Ultimate will flash to 6100. That's all my combo needs. If you have less input torque or need more stall then the 8" or even smaller would be appropriate.

Depends on who built it and if they will stand behind it. They should be able to fix it and upgrade where needed. Only question will be is if it’s cost effective as opposed to buying new that’s already beefed up.

Well if it worked at one time and now does not, it may need repair. If it never worked it may just be too loose and could be tightened up. I think only a good torque converter manufacture could tell you for sure.

I have a 8" conv that I blew through and I.m still using it.. let it cool
down and it should be fine.. I went to 9600 rpm on mine and it normally
stalls at 5600 rpm.. I dont use a rpm chip for the stall which is how I
leave the line all the time
