3.54 vs 3.73 performance difference - 04/25/19 12:10 AM

Has anybody done a comparison between 3.54 and 3.73 gears in the 1/4? I'm getting a new Dana 60 for my cuda but I'm unsure about which ratio to go with. Car is street/ strip but no highway driving, just around town and back roads. Car has 528 Hemi with a 4 speed and 295/55/15s.

not enough to notice on the street

If it was me I would buy the 3:73 for the stick tranny, 3:54 for a 727 up
is your tranny a NP833 standard ratio, non O.D.,or which tranny are you using and what is the first gear ratio?

iagree Not enough to notice. I'd probably go with the 3.73 though. twocents

iagree Not much difference. On a street car, I would be more interested in whether one set would be quieter than the other. Lots and lots of noisy gear sets out there nowadays. Dr. Diff is the go-to guy on these matters. Here is a good calculator for you:

No highway use, street/strip........

If the ET is a factor in deciding on which gears, I’d probably go 4.10’s with a stick.

Since you are just putting around back roads and no freeway driving put the gears in it that work the best for the strip. At least 4.10's

I changed from a 3:54 to 4:10 on my hemi cuda and it only raised the rpm at 70mph 500. It's a 426 4speed and has 28" tall tires. It is a lot more fun to drive now.

My car has a 71 18 spline hemi 4 speed which should be a 2.44 first gear.

Re: 3.54 vs 3.73 performance difference - 04/25/19 04:50 PM

I thought all the 18 spline hemi tranny had either the 2.65(red stripe?) or 2.66 (blue stripe?)first gear ratio, no close ratio like in the 1970 23 spline AAR and T/A and in the 1971 and later 23 spline tranny in production vehicles confused

I would go with the 3.73 then. Starting line ratio is about 9.1 vs. 8.6 with the 3.54 gears.

No, I have not done a comparison. In your question above, will the car have street tires, or slicks?

Generally, from my experience, traction limited cars (i.e. street tires at the track) usually show little change in ET because the benefit of the higher gear is lost in the lack of improvement in 60 ft due to the traction limitation of the tire.

But if the car will never be on the highway, why would you not go with the higher gear ratio. It will be more fun to drive.

I could be wrong, but I read that 70 and earlier hemi 4 speeds had the 2.65 and the 71 had the other.

Of them 2 selections with a 528 Hemi I would go with the 3.73's. Good luck , Ron

The car has drag radials on it.

Mopar added the close ratio to the 23 spline trannys in 1970 on the AAR and T/A cars, they then drop the 2.66,265, ratio in the 23 spline tranny only (is what I'm under the impression) and put the close ratio trannys in all the 1971 4 speed cars except the Hemi and 440 HP cars confused
I've never had a 1971 hemi or 440 18 spline tranny to check the first gear ratio, maybe some one here who has one can chime in work

Welcome to the slippery slope! I originally just wanted a good 4-barrel on my 383 Satellite..... haha.

Here's the two sources where it lists the 2.44 first gear ratio for 1971.

Those are the first and only things I've seen in writing about the 18 spline 1st gear ratio being change for 1971 bow blush

This leads me to a question, I currently have 3.73s in a Dana 60, would the jump to 4.10s be substantial? Currently have an OD trans.

3.73 divided by 4.10= 9.01 % according to my calaculator shruggy
I tried using 3.73 then 3.91, then 4.10 and finally 4.30 I my old pump gas Duster, very little differences in ET and MPH in the 1/4 mile.
I ended up bending the heck out of the 8 3/4 housing and put a truck Dana 60 cut down with 4.10, I ran both the M/T 325x60x15 ET Street radials and the M/T 10.5x31x15W slicks on 10 and 12 inch wide rims at the track with no real differences in that car on either set confused
