440 Piston selection question

I somewhat recenlty bought a 72 Duster with a mostly stock 440 aside from a cam and typical bolt ons... I decided I wanted to do a quick tear down and do a budget rebuild that would include a few parts that I recently aquired. I have a set of ProMaxx Heads (Sidewinders) which are at 84 cc's, Harland Sharp 1.60 Rollers, Comp XE284 cam and a ported Eddy RPM intake. My question is since I am trying to do this on a budget, what pistons are a good bang for the buck? I have been looking at the KB236 or KB237 (not sure if the 237 will work with my heads being sort of a closed chamber). I am trying to acheive 10.5 or slightly better compression. I know the Speed Pro 2355's are a good choice for not much more money, my only concern is valve clearance as it appears they do not have much of a valve pocket compaired to other pistions. This motor will never see NItrous and once I complete my stroker motor the 440 bottom end will be placed in my truck after I top it off with my 452 heads.

Wiseco Pro Tru is a nice piston for the money, you will need to cut the deck an extra .020-.025 or so if you run an aftermarket H beam to get around 0 deck though. .05 below deck with a .039 gasket will put you right about 10.5 with an 80 CC head

I like Icon's. I have a set of Speed Pro in a motor and they are HEAVY. Icons cost a little more but are lighter.

Lighter is way better You could swap the rods out to a decent set of forged H beam or I beam BB Chevy type (7.100 long) with a set of custom pistons but that does require grinding the rod journals down to the BB Chevy size 2.200 I have that done on all my forged steel Mopar cranks along with having them offset ground to 3.90 stroke, more torque with the longer stroke and better parts

So its not clear what all you are doing to the motor. Are you having it bored and honed, rebuilt or new rods, and a re-balance?

Hard to beat these for the money. A little over $400 WITH rings. Float em or press em, nice stuff. I have a set on a motor I recently built. Came in at -.018" deck height, block had a light skim cut on the decks.

Where did you find the Wiseco piston for that price? I dont see anything near $400...

To clarify, yes I will be completely rebuilding the engine, hot tank, magnaflux, bore and machine to achieve .005 piston to deck and balance

I really like the Icon pistons and have had good luck with them the last couple of engines I've worked on. I think they're around $600 a set.

Another option is the Speed Pro 2355 "six pack" pistons. Cheap on ebay, but don't come w/ the rings.

Stock rod or aftermarket? Mine are about .022 below with H beams and a skim cut, but the aftermarket rods I've seen are actually .008 shorter than stock

If you can get the Wisecos for $400ish w/rings I doubt you'll find a better deal than that.

I got the wiseco pro tru with rings through summit for 485. They have a 2.050 compression height. Great bang for buck.

I do wish the compression height was a little taller but I can make up the difference in cuting the deck height...

Mahle Motorsports makes an amazing piston in a 2.065" CHT with an impossible to beat ring pack featuring a 1mm/1mm thg/2mm size. I wouldn't even consider anything else. J.Rob
