Failed roller clutches again

Failed roller clutches again - 04/10/19 03:39 PM

Broke a pinion under load. Fixed the rear and the driveshaft. The transmission passed the "output shaft turns easy one direction, tight the other" test. Drove around, everything seemed fine. Him..."Do I really need to check the transmission since it's working OK?" Me..."I would." Had a "little vibration."

Half the rollers were not engaged. It moved and drove, but wouldn't have survived a hard hit on a sticky track. Transmission has a brake in it. Not sure whose or how it works so I'm not sure of how it runs the rear band, but I will try to find out..

Yep, I don't care if it "feels" ok or not, if it pitches a shaft or blows a rear up the trans is coming apart period before it makes another lap. It sucks that it's such a pain to do, but not doing it and having an explosion is something I never want to experience.

What if you brake a axle. I did and was wondering if I should check sprag. It didn't rev up or anything when it broke. It just felt funny and I let off the throttle.

If you have a spool or posi then you still have one drive wheel loading
the trans which keeps a load on the sprag.. would I check it.. yep
but most likely it didnt roll it over but still worth a check

To me, any hard shock(breakage) to the driveline warrants a walk thru of the tranny.

Best advice. đź‘Ť

Locks one way and turns the other doesn’t account for rolled spring retainer fingers - “grenade pin has been pulled”.

I'm just trying to make people aware of the fact that just because the car drives, moves and acts normal, the roller clutch can be failed and cause real problems if continue to drive or try to race it. Again, this thing has a brake in it and I would have assumed is LBA, I'm going to check that out further.

As mentioned.....ALWAYS go through it and/or just replace the trans after any hard shock/breakage.

A couple of years ago I had an important double-header points race. Stripped a ring & pinion during a test & tune run and didn't run the first event on Saturday. But it didn't count against my event/points quota because it wasn't a qualifying run. Replaced the center section with a spare, everything felt good, so I raced on Sunday and won! However, the damage was already done and the trans quit first pass at the next event a few weeks later - luckily, again, during their test & tune. So just about any shock due to breakage can cause enough damage that will eventually lead to outright breakage of the trans. The importance of the events clouded my better judgement. I thought I "dodged the bullet", but was obviously "hit". I just didn't "feel" it! But if anything happened in any other order, I would have lost the 2017 IHRA Stock Championship! Their last one. Trans was a 904.

And I’m betting it had the factory riveted orc in it or the rivets were replaced with bolts.

I'd like to replace the spring retainer on this, but I don't want to remove the outer race if it doesn't have to be changed. So I'll fix it.

Anyone using the ATI 904 sprag?
