LEGAL FUEL CELL IN A SW

LEGAL FUEL CELL IN A SW - 03/11/19 01:27 AM

I've never seen the answer to a fuel cell in a SW. Saw the fold down over the spare tire but that doesn't look safe enough for a St/Strip car. Any ideas with pics? Thanks

SW = station wagon? Plenty of cars, usually hatchbacks like 4th Gen Camaros, Vegas, Omnis and Daytonas, have similar situations. Rules are the same for all. There has to be a metal bulkhead between the fuel system components and the passenger area. I've seen some creative solutions. Don't have any photos of any.

Do the rules specify that the bulkhead has to be verticle? If not it seems like an easy problem to solve.

That is how I see it.
You would be legal by boxing it in from the actual interior............I think.

Nope, it can be a box type affair or panel with a door to get to the fill.

Yep. Sealed metal bulkhead of some kind. Go to the track and look at some hatchback cars.

I don't have a photo handy, but I have an Aspen SW with a 5 gal. fuel cell in the spare tire well which has the metal OEM hatch over it. The tire well floor is boxed & dropped enough to allow the top to close. It's secured with Dzus fasteners with added seals around, but the rear tailgate/hatch also helps keep it shut. It's passed tech at local bracket and NHRA divisional events.
