Turbo lag

Beyond saying that knowing what I know now , that turbocharging makes a lot of sense , I know very little about it.
But I have a good handle on humorous , and I think this is it.
Hope you found it as funny as I did.

I have the boost itch pretty bad. I have an R1 block, enough fuel system for 1200HP, and multi point EFI with pretty much limitless capabilities already. From just a little bit of figuring and looking around it would cost me $6000-7000 to do a pro-charger setup that would support 800-1000HP and that is without touching the motor. I think I could do a turbo deal for less than that including putting in a stronger piston and a cam suited for boost. So now all i need is a little money and time...easy right? lol

Having dabbled in the diesel turbo world I will tell you what I know (what I’ve been told) to the truthfulness and accuracy I can not attest.

Turbo lag is caused by an exhaust housing that is too large for the amount of exhaust gasses exiting engine, thus causing a longer time to spin the boost wheel causing the lag between the foot to the floor and the turbo catching up.


Exhaust housings that are too small are also an issue. We used to take the 20mm exhaust side housing off our hx35’s and put on 16mm ones. There were also 12’s but we found this caused exhaust temps higher than desirable without water injection to keep the pistons in it.

[size:14pt][/size]Turbo lag prevention illustrated. At low throttle, seriously retard timing and put some air and lots of fuel in. Keeps the turbo spun up and ready to go. Just make sure nobody is standing behind!

Drive an older (I do not have experience with newer ones) Dodge Ram with a Cummins and a manual trans. and you will experience turbo lag. Just cruise along in a higher gear at say 35 - 40 mph (1000 - 1200 rpm) and stab the throttle. After a second or two you will feel the kick in the but. That is turbo lag. Your boost pressure got high enough to force more air and fuel into the cylinders.

The newer ones don’t have this issue, they have diminutive exhaust housings some as small as 9mm to lessen the problem, however it adds a totally different issue in high EGT temps when you start hotrodding them.
