727 front clutch clearance question? - 12/12/18 08:41 PM
Working on a 1966 727. Normal front clutch clearance is 0.120+. Added an extra steel and now clearance is 0.053". That seems on the tight side, but when looking up the pre-1971 specs seems to be OK?
Currently has the 0.060" snap ring. Tried a thick Snap ring, but the drum is not machined to fit a snap ring over about 0.080"
Anyhow, in these early year 727s is the tighter clearance OK, or should I remove the extra steel, and just use some of the thicker 0.086" steels?

.012"-.015" per friction. 4 friction, .048"-.060"

Stock rebuild that you want to have OE performance and driveability is different from a performance/race unit. Have to build it for the intended use.

FWIW, mine is .90+" now and has 12 springs. John Cope told me to use 15 springs w/ my new CRT RMVB and would like to see the clearance down around .080", IIRC.
Somebody else already mentioned it's really all about what the trans is set up to use & do, so all I can do is 2nd that.

The .012"-.015" clearance per friction will fall inside the factory specified range for every 727 from 62-71. After 71 they were set slightly looser.

Most of the transmissions I have done were '71-up that is why I'm asking.
The piston only has 10 spring pegs and 10 springs. Just a TF-2 shift kit and the Raybestos Green front clutches with kolene steels.
Not sure why the specs on the earlier transmissions are a bit tighter than the '71-up specs?
