Motor Mounts - 11/21/18 04:25 AM

As alot of you probably already know, I plan on a 440 stroker build with around 600 ft-lbs of torque for a street/strip Charger. Was just wondering whether or not I should go with a solid driver's side mount and stock pass mount, or both solid. Has anyone ever broken a pass side mount (other than from simple wear over the years)? Also, on Jegs and Summit, the Moroso solid mounts are listed with the cars they fit, (66-70 B-body), but oddly enough don't state Charger. Is this because there is a difference between Chargers and other B-bodies? (sadly, like many other parts), or is it simply a mistake?

Been running solid mount on the driver's side and rubber on the passenger for a couple years.
11.0-11.20 '67 Coronet. Stoplights ya might notice aome extra vibration. Really about it.

Re: Motor Mounts - 11/21/18 05:26 AM

Also, how would solid on driver's and poly on pass side be? (Even though that will be way more expensive and I probably wouldn't do it, just wondering what everyone thinks). And the solids replace every part of the mount, correct? Everything from the connecting point on the engine to the k-member is replaced?

Just run solids on both sides. There is no reason not to.

Thats what I was originally thinking, but I heard the vibration is unbearable. Also, would the stock bolts be fine? Or should I go to grade 8? Has anyone broken the mount bolts?

I’ve run the solid / stock combo for years with good results. Works well in my experience. I’m going to change out the stock one this winter as it seems to be moving a little more than it used to.

hi

keep the stock or poly mounts and install a restrictor device .

i use a short piece of chain last 30 years and cost less than $10.

Chains stretch, just like eye bolts do work
I've use a solid strap from the sub frame or K member bolted to the upper power steering bolt boss on the BB water pumps for years with no wear or failures so far work scope
I'm a racer first and may be less concerned over creatures comforts than some others on here shruggy

I like poly both sides or a solid/poly combo with a strap either way for insurance. I figure stock-type rubber will deteriorate/beat-out quicker while poly will offer longer life and less movement while still provide some dampening. Even with a solid/poly driver's side mount, it seems like OEM rubber will move/compress under load quite a bit.

I have always used a simple hardware store turnbuckle on the driver's side. Have never had a problem doing it that way.

I drove for years and years and years with them on both sides. No one who rode with me knew. Never had a complaint about vibration, and the gals I dated back then would [censored] about anything. The vibration thing just doesn't happen.

You can use grade 8 bolts, I just don't know why you need them. They won't hurt.

I have the poly late style mounts (73 and newer) and I HATE them. If you've driven a car with solid mounts and then drive one with these newer style mounts it's just not the same. The biggest mistake I made was not buying a 72 and earlier K frame when I redid the car. That was a bone head move. I have the Schumacher mounts, and while they are nice and all, they ain't solid mounts, and they never will be.

When I stumble across and earlier K frame I'll snatch it up, fix it (they all need work) and gladly go back to solid mounts on both sides.

FWIW, I don't run any cables, chains, turnbuckles or other crap like that. For one, they look farmyard to me.

The other is I've seen them actually pull the front cylinder out of round. More than once.

I also run a solid drivers side and stock pass mount. Been like that since about 2008 and no problems. Ron

Re: Motor Mounts - 11/21/18 10:36 PM

I've ran stock type rubber mounts both sides, ripped em to shreds many times street racing. Not actually fun.
I've ran solid driver's rubber passengers no problems.
I've ran solid both sides, no problem.
I've ran solid motor plates and elephant ears on the street no problems.
I like the locking Schumacher type mounts the best for a street car myself.

Just keep a rubber trans mount IMO!!!

Thanks, at first i wouldnt habe though to run stock style mounts, somehow broke them with the 440 as-is (which is, as far as i know, stock). How much power were you making with the solid drivers/stock pass mounts? Were you running DRs or slicks?

On a side note: is a poly trans mt a no no?

I broke rubber engine mounts with a MILD 400 and highway gears, BF Goodrich radial TAs. It doesn't take much to break rubber mounts. Trust me!! If you run rubber toss a limiting device on IMO

Schumacher poly engine mounts are nice and should work fine for your application. They also make a nice torque strap. I use both on my 525ish hp 505" in 72 Challenger.

Re: Motor Mounts - 11/22/18 05:12 PM

Schumacher has a really nice engine hold down that bolts to the K-Frame/engine and is adjustable. That's what I use.

My friend has a 440 in a '72 Dart with the AREngineering solid mount. No vibration issues whatsoever. You would never know it was mounted that way riding in it.

Since no one will answer this part of your question...
Chargers use the same motor mounts as other B-bodies. It must have been an oversight in the description.
As a side note I have ran solid mounts on both sides of my wife's Cuda' with a 512 for 20 years. No issues street or strip.

Ok thank you, thats what I assumed I just wanted to be sure because of all the small differences in different cars.

Re: Motor Mounts - 11/23/18 03:57 AM

So what I'm hearing is solid on both sides shouldn't be too much of a problem. I will probably do that, worst case I could easily swap the pass side back out if necessary.

The 2 mounts serve different purposes, and are subject to opposite forces.

Re: Motor Mounts - 11/23/18 04:00 AM

well the op ask for a STREET car that only see track ocasinaly !

and yes cheep hardware store chain and i bolts can strech !

now get a piece of G7 chain and equil eye bolt and have a small amount of movement that does not transmit vibrations to car from solid strap for a STREET car and have best of both worlds !

Re: Motor Mounts - 11/26/18 04:24 PM

I'd use solid mounts. The vibration doesn't bother me.
If you're worried about it, use stock mounts and get the torque strap from Schumacher Creative Services. I have one on my dad's six pack road runner and it works great.

Re: Motor Mounts - 11/26/18 11:53 PM

I bought a set of the interlocking Poly mounts. They are expensive, so I just used one each on the drivers side mount of my two cars, and run good quality stock replacements on the passenger side.
