Recommend an intake for my 499" RB

Recommend an intake for my 499" RB - 11/13/18 03:03 AM

499" RB, ported Eddies, hyd cam about 240*, mostly street, 69 Charger, 3.55 gears, 727.

I am pulling the big solid cam and big open intake off this engine and want to mild it up a bit and install it in a more driver friendly combo. I would prefer to run a Dominator, but am open to a big 4150.

A 337 would be nice, but............

What intake would you recommend for a mostly street driven car. And it would be nice if it would fit under the hood with a drop base air cleaner and maybe even lowering the K.

Thanks

Does "ported Eddies" mean MW-sized Performer RPMs? Or are they still standard port (in which case a '337 wouldn't work)?

My ported Edelbrock's made 650 with a BG flowed dom. and a gasket matched, Weiand 4500 Team G. 493, .660 Comp roller, 12.9-1. 112 leaded race gas. Went 145mph in my 2,700 pound Challenger right out of the box.

iagree
OP, if your using CNC ported Eddy RPM with the stock size 440 intake gaskets I would and do use the Eddy Performer RPM intake on a lot of builds like yours with those heads along with a 950 or 1000 HP Holley 4150 carbs up
As far as the drop base air cleaner clearing your hood I'm thinking they will luck shruggy

If his heads have been opened up to MW size, somebody (NOT ME!) has just listed an Indy 440-2D intake that looks to have been CNC'd on the port exits to MW, too.

Can you still buy a 337 ?

Dave H, what was your stripe rpm to knock out 145 mph at the stripe? What is are Your rearend ratio. Tire size? While I'm at it, are You running a glide or 3 speed? Sorry for hi-jacking the thread but I want more mph and I think I need a lot more rpm than I'm spinning now eek

I think it's to the point where it's only if somebody who has one already is willing to sell it.

Modern CNCed them a few years ago. They are bigger than stock, but not really MW.

My Modern Eddy's flow 325 cfm on the intake according to the flow sheet that Modern sent with the heads back in 2012. Dave , I sent you a PM.

FWIW those heads and cam are now in/on a STOCK 400. It runs great with an OOTB Performer RPM and an HP 750 with a 50cc acc. pump. Sorry I missed the whole "tame it down a bit"... grin

I am a bit surprised at the dual plane recommendations for a 499" engine. I would have thought that a DP would be a "cork" in the intake of an engine that big.

But it's not???????

Re: Recommend an intake for my 499" RB - 11/13/18 04:06 AM

I've ran it up to 7,000 rpm. It runs great! Idles like a champ. If I drive it everyday it starts right up and away we go. If I let it sit a few days it's a cold blooded buck snort!

Re: Recommend an intake for my 499" RB - 11/13/18 04:17 AM

Anyone know off hand which is shorter; the Indy 2d or the Eddy RPM? I'm thinking that height will be an issue getting it all under the hood.

Re: Recommend an intake for my 499" RB - 11/13/18 04:51 AM

For me, the gears and converter would guide my choices.

Re: Recommend an intake for my 499" RB - 11/13/18 05:24 AM

Okay, tight converter. Well, as tight as your going to get with a 499" big block and 3.55 or 3.23 gears.

I have had PTC and Ultimate Converters build me as tight a street converter as they can for my 540 Hemi. Ultimate's converter will flash to 4,200 and the best PTC could do was north of 4,500. And that is with 3.91s. Not exactly what I call tight, but was all they said they could do with the cores available.

The Ultimate does feel tighter and the car feels more responsive down low. Just better for driving around town and cruising.

You're the one who said you wanted to tame it down. If you don't want to lose the power, maybe you should leave it as it is. It's tough to have it both ways.

Re: Recommend an intake for my 499" RB - 11/13/18 05:54 AM

Performer RPM is a good choice for a big street engine. I've run various Performer RPM intakes over the years on a lot of 500 inch big block Mopar engines. Hard to beat that intake on the street. Once you get the engine past 5000 rpm a single plane will work better.

Lots of love for the RPM. Looks like the way to go.

Re: Recommend an intake for my 499" RB - 11/13/18 05:52 PM

If you want less stall, you just need to use a bigger converter.

I’d be pretty surprised if a factory 12” converter stalled over 4K behind that motor.

Re: Recommend an intake for my 499" RB - 11/13/18 06:09 PM

The Holley Street Dominator will get you more hood clearance if that's an issue. It runs basically the same as the Performer RPM even though it's a single plane. Very good manifold.

Perhaps your comment was an observation, rather than a recommendation. work

Re: Recommend an intake for my 499" RB - 11/13/18 09:24 PM

It was more of an observation, but if that’s what you needed........I’m sure a factory 12” converter could be made to live behind a motor like that.

I’m also confident an 11” could be tightened up enough to stall below 4200.

X2! This is the intake I run and I have room for 1/2" spacer and a nitrous plate and it still fits under my stock hood with a drop base air filter.

Stock Street Dominator is good but ported is better!

I run an 11". Works really well!

Re: Recommend an intake for my 499" RB - 11/13/18 10:56 PM

Well, I am doing basically the same thing as Dave, our builds are very close, and I am running my old tried and true 6 Pac setup. It has always worked very well on the street. I am running a Dynamic tight 10" convertor 373 Dana and will be installing a Gearvendors unit. If I were running a single four 4150 style, I would also go with the Holley SD, great manifold and properly ported is even better!

Re: Recommend an intake for my 499" RB - 11/14/18 03:01 AM

I spoke to several converter guys about this. I have a couple of 12" converters here for cores. Apparently, there are no internals available for them for this kind of build.

And they said the 11" are hard to find and expensive because some of the racers scoop them up when they come up. So we're basically stuck using the too small 10" stuff because there are cores and internals readily available for them.

I am just reciting what the converter builders have told me.

As to the intake, I have a Street Dominator. Good intake. But I converted it to Dominator flange years ago and it looks like it would be a chore to shrink back down to 4150.

So it looks like the RPM is the first choice for many here. Followed by the Indy dual plane and then the Holley.

Probably all good intakes that will do the job AND fit under the hood with a 4150 and maybe a drop base air cleaner.

Re: Recommend an intake for my 499" RB - 11/14/18 03:25 AM

440 2D gets my vote. It will be the same height as the RPM, and will make more power. The SD will match the 440 2D in power, but despite the 500+ in motor, the single plane SD is softer below 3500.

I have 1900 stall and a 3.23 in a 4150 lb car with the 440 2D.

I shift 6300-6500 rpm, FWIW

Re: Recommend an intake for my 499" RB - 11/14/18 03:54 AM

Ok, dumb question. There are adaptors available to adapt Dommies to 4150 intake, can you just flip the adapter over? What are you calling 11"? The 10-3/4 RR/Hemi converter or a different core? If it is the mopar, I have a spare 10-3/4 core.
Posted By: DaveRS23

Re: Recommend an intake for my 499" RB - 11/14/18 03:58 AM

In my case, the adapter wouldn't let it all fit under the hood.

Call any of the Mopar oriented converter guys and they can give you the skinny on your converter. I think that it is one I would have loved to have had as a core this last go-around.

Re: Recommend an intake for my 499" RB - 11/14/18 04:04 AM

I was not clear Dave, if you need the core, let me know.

Re: Recommend an intake for my 499" RB - 11/14/18 04:56 AM

Mopar made many different version of both the 12 and 11 inch "stock OEM" converters, including the highest stall 11 inch 1970 383 2 barrel motor in the C bodies to street hemi and on the 12 inch motorhomes from low stall 35 Ft Class A chassis to the 1968 and up 318 class B chassis converters shruggy
I had a SS/AH race Hemi T/A 8 inch converter in my old pump gas Duster that worked absolutely excellent on the street up
it was tight at light throttle in town driving and would stall around 5200 RPM at the track in low gear on the hit boogie That was a really good converter for me devil

Re: Recommend an intake for my 499" RB - 11/14/18 09:15 AM

I run the Indy 2d dual plane intake on my 493. It just fits under the hood of my 63 as it has about 1/4 of room between the carb stud and the hood. I like that intake for the street on my car. I have never tried a single plane as I think the MP 337 may be the only single plane other then the Holley Street Dominator that will fit under my hood. But I have been very happy with the Indy 2d intake on my car. Ron

Thank you, Lee. I would have liked to have had that core last year when I went through my last converter change.

But I am done with pulling the thing apart......at least I hope I am. I have had the engine and tranny back out twice dealing with this converter issue. It is much better now. To the point that I can live with it.

Cab,
I am at the point now where the vast majority of the car's time is spent cruising and just driving around. And I like my street cars crisp down low. All of the converters worked okay, they were just too soft (mushy) down low for my liking. What little track time I do, 4,000+ flash gets the car into the 1.5s 60ft. Not too bad for a street car. Plus, I don't tear up as many parts as I would with more flash.

Lenny at Ultimate took the time to discuss what I wanted and recommended changes to my car. Then took my PTC converter and made some changes to it. PTC, who built the converter and tried a second time to tighten it up, said there was nothing more they could do.

For less than $300 total, including shipping, Lenny made a real difference. Much tighter, crisper, and more responsive down low.

up Thank you Lenny at Ultimate!

Re: Recommend an intake for my 499" RB - 11/14/18 04:53 PM

In light of the 10” converter, I think either the RPM, Holley SD, or an M1 single plane would work just fine.

The RPM would be a bit sharper on the bottom, the single planes should be a bit better up high.

I wouldn’t expect big differences between any of them though.

I’d top it off with a 1.45 x 1.75 4150 carb.

I’m sure a spacer would be worth something, and in that regard the Holley is the lowest, so it would have the most available room to use a spacer on.

Re: Recommend an intake for my 499" RB - 11/15/18 01:59 AM

I agree with that. But just out of curiosity, why did you leave the Indy off your list?

Like I said before, I have a Holley intake now, and I have always had good luck with them, although I have never heard much about them from other guys. But I cut this one for a Dominator years ago. I will pull it out and see just how hard it would be to shrink back to 4150 dimensions.
Posted By: fast68plymouth

Re: Recommend an intake for my 499" RB - 11/15/18 04:01 AM

The only reason I left the Indy 440-2D off the list was I don’t know that I feel it’s better enough to justify the added cost over the other 3 when used with std port heads.

I ran both the RPM and the Holley SD in my 470ci 71 Charger R/T With ported 906 / 228@.50 Crower cam and a STOCK 11.75 (2200 STALL) converter 355 rear with tall 275 tire and OEM Thermoquad from a 73 440 . I like the SD better as it fit better and on my car the mid to top power was amazing with no loss of low end power that I could feel. At the track , the SD would et so much better where the Edelbrock seemed dead at 5k . The 60ft was the same with both intakes but the 1/8 was better as well as 1/4 et and mph. On the street the car had just as much low power as befor. BTW , I think mopar only made 11.75 or 10.75 converter ? With this combo (sd intake )my car would run consistant 12.80s at 109 mph with bfg drag radials . That car was the ultimate cruzer . I sold the car a few years back.
