Shorty 727 TF kits .... - 10/09/18 02:59 AM

Who still makes these or maybe has some NOS items ? Prefer 62-65 but I'll take the 66-71 .... I bought one at a swap meet some years ago but in my move from south Michigan to northern Michigan the shorty tail shaft was misplaced or at the worst lost. Any help would be appreciated ....

Thx Dguy but yeah you're right that not the correct type - the one(actually I could be in the market for TWO OF THEM) I'm looking for is a total of maybe 4" or so off the back of the case. I think the company's that marketed them were ... B&M Fairbanks Art Carr and jw ...

Club cab trucks had short output shafts but they were fixed yoke..

There was a clutchflite trans with a winters short shaft conversion priced good at 700 in the trans section last month. If you want to split it up, Id buy the clutchflite portion.

Doc I tired to PM but you are over your limit. I have a shorty stock trans (ain't sure if that is what you want) but I wrote myself to take a pic when I get over there (likely tomorrow).

I had one of those a few years back. I sold it at a swap meet for $40 and was happy to get rid of it. Actually had a hard time selling it since most people didn't know what it was and the other folks didn't want it.

rb. .... I hear you on that but IF we are thinking about the same thing .., I think one that you are referring to is the one that has the bolt on flange at the end of the output shaft that the u joint attaches to. That one isn't short enuff - thx for the thought though.

AF .. that's the same way I picked up my last one - a long LONG time ago ... Milan Dragway at the Mopar meet !! I remember it almost like it was yesterday - he asked me THREE TIMES if I knew what it was !! He threw in a manual VB and a Art Carr shifter goose neck but no guts ! ... 30 bux !! ... but that was then ! ... The reason why he was having trouble selling it was because it was the early trans -- JUST what I was looking for !

It shows up fine .. That's the later trans - I prefer the early model but I can make this work - are you sure it's still available ? No hurry though - I'm about 60 days from needing that for a mock up. I'll also need a good or junk RB trans case ., keep me posted .. Thx

Piece of PS history those trannys are..

Makes me think about a 3 speed dragster trans, using a 727, instead of a glide.

Piece of hIsToRy ? ... Modify that above pic to a push button trans with an Art Carr gooseneck shifter !!! ... that beeez way YESTERTech !

Re: Shorty 727 TF kits .... - 10/09/18 08:19 PM

Remember when planning?
Good: driveshaft angle goes down slightly
Bad: longer driveshaft is weaker and has lower maximum RPM

Re: Shorty 727 TF kits .... - 10/09/18 08:39 PM

Yo poly .., I hear you but this combo here NEEDS a shorty kit because of severe engine setback. Without a short shaft I would not have much of a driveshaft length at all.

Re: Shorty 727 TF kits .... - 10/09/18 10:23 PM

For the '62-'65 this is the one you want. I sold this particular one on E-bay several years ago for (I think) $150. I doubt if anybody is making them any more but they might appear occasionally used.

This version allowed the use of the rear pump, a shorter version was available that required the removal of the rear pump.

Here's what the shorter version looked like, required shortening the slip yoke.

Re: Shorty 727 TF kits .... - 10/09/18 10:38 PM

SHORTER than that one JK ? ...didn't know there were two styles of the 62-65 ! don't need it that short but it would be nice THAT WAY. The one I had had a pump in it. How many diff versions or styles were made for all of the aftermarket kits ? How many trans bizes just put trier name on it ?

One of these would solve a problem I have - do they have a provision for a speedo cable ??

I've seen at least a dozen of them over the years .. never saw one that had a speedo cable plug hole. Would LIKE to have some type speedo on my project - was thinking about something like an old aftermarket cruise control - with small magnets off the driveshaft

Re: Shorty 727 TF kits .... - 10/10/18 10:27 PM

None of the aftermarket shorty tails have speedo provisions, there's barely enough room for the slip yoke splines let alone a speedo drive gear.

Autometer makes GPS speedometers. Speedhut is another.

My '85 d350 has one.
I believe anything with a longer wheelbase than a reg. cab long bed will have one too.

Doc I think mine is what Stanton posted. I will get over there tomorrow with my camera.

4x4 with divorced transfer case is where the one I have came from. I don't know if it was a W100, W200 or w300. Motorhome too but they usually had the E-brake on the back. I'm not sure if they shared the same output shaft or not.
