Chevy one wire alternator

Chevy one wire alternator - 09/19/18 03:32 PM

I bought my one wire alternator for 30.00 off a table at Norwalk years ago and love it. Its only around 60 amp and keeps up if I throw a trickle charger on it once a month with lots of racing. I will be needing a couple more and I like the fact this is smaller and 90 amp. 3 year warranty is nice too. Have any of you guys tried this one?

I am interested too. I will be putting an alternator on my car because I'm already tired of dragging a generator with and charging between rounds, and I've only done it once. bawling

I also used the old one wire Delcotron. Carried parts so it could be fixed at the track and actually had to do that once. Worked great. Hit the battery with the charger during the week and forget about it. Everyone likes the little ones now.

I went the more expensive route:

Small update

My buddy bought his over a year ago and because of issues had it tested for output. Instead of the advertised 90 amp his was around 60. He has a street strip car with headlights so he’s not happy. The alternator shop that tested it told him that the small frame alternators like that are only capable of around 60 amp, not 90. I went ahead and ordered one because I know 60 is plenty for me

I buy the cheap cs130 gm one wires. I think they get 100 amps out of them. They are chrome so they are a little goddy but the always work on my cars

Update

I took mine up to my local alternator shop to have checked. It put out 50 amps (supposed to be 90) and he said maybe slightly several more when I reved it up. I gave the seller a poor review on Ebay yesterday and he tried calling today. I didn't recognize the number so I never answer those but he left me a message pleading with me to change my review. Then he texted me offering me some money back. No thanks!!! I'll use it on something. Hopefully it will save some other sucker.

Alternator ratings are like movie reviews on Netflix.....I have gone thru a couple alternators to find one or two that keeps up on each of my cars.

Even called a name brand company after getting the alternator they recommended at over $300 and it did not work like they said. Its all BS the numbers they post from some happy lab equipment...They're excuse was that it was really made for roundy round cars. Yet I told them My exact application before I purchased it and that was the one they recommended....You can't even get good advice from they're own people anymore.

I use full size 100 amp alternators, and I have had mini, and full size, and you never really seem to know until you try it.

Now that I am being too negative, I will go away...But that is the truth of my experiences.

My exact experience as well (probably the same company)..right down to the "well that's built for circle track cars" excuse. After tossing another $300+ unit, I picked up a generic cs130 from Napa for like $60 and haven't had issues yet. Went out of my way to buy a good one and was disappointed, it's all good now.

This is the one we got for my boss street car. It is a small car and we needed something that would fit but had good output. Powermaster said this one.

Anyone asked about having these low amp alternators rewound for more amps?

The shop I went to kinda made it sound like it wasn't worthwhile. I'm not really in need of one that small so I think he told me he could get me a true 90 amp or bigger for around 90.00 so that's what I will do over the Winter. That way he can verify it while I'm standing there. My small tire car came with a 16 volt but for now it will be going back to 12 volt. Back to back testing on my car years ago showed me that wasn't needed and I didn't even have an alternator on that car.

I have the east coast ultra mini and it seems to do the job. 2 weeks ago at Keystone I round robin the car using electric fan, water pump, fuel pump and head lights 7 rounds in about an hour and half with one 12v battery never used a battery charger and no problems. I think the car's wiring is a major factor along with the pulley ratio. Oh and when that little alternator really has to work it gets hot and takes a few hp to turn it, belt has to be tight or it will slip. just my 2 cents.

I have a tiny alternator off an 89 dakota that’s supposed to be 90. Maybe I should have it checked out! It does need a regulator though.

I have had one wire setups before- they work fine but doesn’t the internal regulator just make it junk if it goes bad instead of just replacing the regulator? What’s the appeal?
