Mountain Motor Pro Stock - 09/05/18 12:14 AM

...was mid .30s to mid .40s at Indy. 218 to 220 MPH. I'd like to see them included in NHRA Pro Stock. Sure would liven it up. 100 pounds on the big motor cars, 100 off the 500"ers should get them close.

Let the be-itching begin from the teams if this fly's. If it brings Ford and Mopar back into the mix I'm back as a spectator, as long as they also start looking like cars again instead of "cookie cutters"

Never gonna work. Most of those guys campaigned those cars on the IHRA side because they gave them a place to race and they didnt have the wallets to be competetive on the NHRA side.
Nothing has changed. Those guys will get “ outwalleted” in short order

They've been racing PDRA and putting on a good show. Dodges and Ferds in the mix. I don't think it costs as much to run a big motor car. I say get the weight break right and let them run.

Fixed it for you. They had 2 tenths on the NHRA cars. Adjust that with weight and the 500s can compete with them.

Putting on a good show running 1/8 mile among themselves.
The reason, as i said earlier, these guys are still racing is because they had/ have a place to race and didnt have to compete with NHRA money.
A few of them ran NHRA and didnt have the funds or skill to go rounds.
They dont have the teams or equipment.

Why not take more weight out and let the 400" guys run as well

If they are playing "The Big Stage", maybe they can get the money.

There is almost zero sponsor money being given out. Why so many are self funded or "sponsored" by the companies they own. The ROI as a sponsor in drag racing is terrible.

Re: Mountain Motor Pro Stock - 09/05/18 02:03 PM

A lot of the 500" cars are already on the ragged edge. Not sure you can take much weight out of them without dramatically effecting the handling of the car. Most people don't take into account just how refined the 500" cars are either. They are drag racing's F-1. 500", no power additive, and they go 6.60's at almost 210 mph. Faster with the carburetors. In my opinion, it makes the Mountain Motor cars look shameful when they have another 330-340" added to them to only run three tenths or so quicker.

I'm not trying to take anything away from the Mountain Motor cars, as I love that they still have carburetors and the big ol' hood scoops. I'm almost 30, and abhor fuel injection and computers. I'm all for letting them run in the class, but it truly does take away from the 500" cars.

As for the 400" cars running, sure, bring it on. At that point, you might as well go back to lbs./cubic inch and let the A-B-C/A Comp cars run too.

I think you would see an increase in class participation though if you let the 500" cars run carburetors again. Yeah, they're a little faster, make them add 50 lbs...since we're already on the topic of throwing all the weight around.

Re: Mountain Motor Pro Stock - 09/05/18 06:50 PM

I wouldn't want to see 20 legal combinations like it was before. That was a mess. Keep it simple. Two combos. Like Top Alcohol Dragster. Pick your poison. Easier for the casual fan to understand and for tech guys to stay on top of as well. Some of the lesser funded 500" teams that always qualify at the bottom might decide to go to the big motors as well.

NA is cool and all but how about a spec turbo charger and keep the 500" limit.

Re: Mountain Motor Pro Stock - 09/05/18 09:19 PM

Maybe a few more 500" cars dropping out next year

From Dragracingonline.com Agent1320

"The NHRA's Pro Stock class and its racers made most of the doorslammer news at the U.S. Nationals last weekend. The Agent has heard from several well connected NHRA Pro Stock sources that perhaps one of the reasons the NHRA brought in Mountain Motor Pro Stocks and floated the rumor that those cars could be part of NHRA's Pro Stock class in 2019 would be the apparent loss of budding Pro Stock superstar and U.S. Nationals winner Tanner Gray.

The Agent’s sources say Gray will most likely leave the NHRA Pro Stock series to drive in the NASCAR truck series in 2019. There are also strong indications that both Drew Skillman and Bo Butner will "ankle" the class.

The Agent suspects that the rumored $45,000 per race fee for a competitive 500-inch Pro Stock motor could be part the problem. On the other hand, if the rumored addition of Mountain Motor Pro Stocks turns out to be true, the Agent thinks there are many ex-IHRA Pro Stock teams and some current Pro Mod teams who would jump at the chance to be part of the NHRA's three official Mello Yello professional classes instead of one of the NHRA's secondary pro classes. ^ Sounds great. Adjust weights or whatever for parity and let the teams use whatever combo they chose.

Then I would stop caring.

Should be fun to watch when he loses his temper and starts running over people, which I think is what he wanted to do a few times in Pro Stock.
