Race car trailers

Besides the weight carrying ability what are the pros and cons of a trailer with 3500# axles vs 5200# axles? trailer will not be used for much towing. Mainly for storing my Dart.

You can get much better trailer tires with the bigger axle tire sizes, and the heavier weight rating suspension will handle marginal roads better, but if mostly for storage it might not be worth it to you. How many miles will you use it yearly on average? Keep in mind trailer tires over 5 years old aren't very reliable.

Tires. Had one. Never again. No fun with tires blown off in the middle of the night a long way from home.

Will be used 2000 miles or less a year.

Go with the bigger axles...... wouldn't even try 2000 miles with the light duty 3500 axles.

I’m sorry but this is hilarious. I just sold my 24 foot enclosed trailer that I have owned for well over 10 years. I race every weekend from May to November and made lots of trips to other states. It had 15 inch tires and 3500 pounds axles. I carry more than my share of spare parts, a 250 cc quad, almost 3000 pounds race car, and more alcohol than you could imagine. I did buy a 26 foot enclosed trailer last year so of course the way the towing rules are being pushed updated to 5000 pound axles and 16 inch tires as hopefully this one finishes out my racing career

Yep, I drug mine all over the country for 10 years. Just got tired of putting tires on it after awhile. When I get a new one, it will have the bigger axles.

When you buy a trailer you should know what your car , tools , fuel and whatever you are going to haul in it. 2- 3500 pound axles , 7000 lbs. sound like a lot but what does the trailer weigh? I think my trailer weighs 4200 then put in a 3200 car = 7400 . Then I put in another ton.

Trailers are one of those purchases that has gotten easier on the wallet. Lots of imported parts that make up the whole trailer(not talking about those 15K+ trailer).Cheaper trailer gets cheap wiring,brakes,steel,paint,tires,etc. My 10+ old trailer is so much better than the present made. Might be cheaper to rent from UHaul or Hertz and never have to service it. I'm always looking for a ramp truck and like to forget the trailer issues

Trailer salesmen lie like car dealers do
I bought and ordered a new Pace Shadow 22 Ft. 7000 Lb. enclosed car trailer to use behind my old motor home, the salesman told me it would weigh right at 1900 lbs. empty with no options, I added around 300 lbs. of options and that trailer actually weighed 4320 when I picked it up at the Pace factory in Hurricane ,Utah With no options the factory said they, that trailer model and size, all weighed in at least 3750 Lbs. ready to go with no options When I put my car into that trailer it was over weight and illegal in CA
My current 10,000 GVW 24 Ft. inside Pace Shadows weighed right at 8600 Lbs. on the axles with my old 3450 Lbs. pump gas duster in it with some tools and spare parts for racing, it added around 700 Lbs. of tonque weight on the rear axle of my 2005 Ram 3500 4WD single wheel pickup also and removed about 150 Lbs. off of the front axle at the same time
Buy the 10,000 Lb. rated trailer to start with for the better brakes, axles, frame, tires and resale value
Make sure and buy a really good electric trailer brake controller also, no cheap ones

Thats what I mean Pittsburghracer.......with all that cargo in the trailer what did it weigh loaded...... was it over the legal axle load rating?

Yes it was and with all the miles I tow I had 3 tires go over all those years. With the rules being enforced more because of several landscape trailers breaking loose and keep point people I wanted to stop looking over my shoulder. I went through several DUI checkpoints and they would give my Trailer a quick peek but I always had it inspected, lights and brakes in good shape, and chains crossed. I was lucky as far as getting ticketed.

Well if you are concerned about overloading your axles for legal reasons? I would check with your local highway patrol to see what they actually check for. I can tell you in Texas they can careless about the axle size and write citations from the weight rating of your tires not the axle just a little bit of unless knowledge.

Pa is a whole different story because of the reasons I listed. The landscapers are a bunch of law breakers that tow with any size ball that they have, no safety chains, and little upkeep. We had a whole family wiped out by one of these creeps and another death shortly after. They all aren’t guilty but many are. If you go through a DOT checkpoint in PA and weight 7050 pounds with a 7000 pound trailer you are cooked. Like I said I was lucky and got tired of pushing my luck.
