Oil cooler kits - 05/29/18 08:04 PM

Looks like i will need an oil cooler for sure now. Two 20 minutes trips had the oil temp just under 260* when i rolled back in the garage. Who makes a good complete kit for under $300 with the fan.

I'm not sure about a kit with a fan, never seen one of those. I do have a new Earl's cooler that I'm not using. I'll make you a good deal on it if you're interested.

B&m makes a real nice unit with the fan and a built in temp sender to control when the fan goes on plus it comes with the pigtails, u do need a relay however the price is not for the anyone with a weak heart.

They have a smaller unit but price is still up there.

I'm curious and may sound like a true rookie but how do you plumb it

Re: Oil cooler kits - 05/29/18 11:33 PM

Theres an adaptor that mounts under the oil filter and have provisions for hose fittings.

Thanks Andy. I think you offered that before. Is that big enough? I really would prefer a kit form cooler.

Been googling oil temps. Looks like the circle track guys are seeing 260-310 oil temps with and without coolers. With 90*+ temps here last few days in might just be borderline for a oil cooler. 80-85 would normal here on a hot day. Gonna continue to look for a cooler kit without the fan.

As usual, no one is listening.

Dave, mine is a pieced together cooler, I purchased a sandwich plate from ebay and did some serious porting to the inside for more flow, then fitted -12 male flares. 2x -12 braided lines and into a cooler like in Andy's pic.
Dont go too cheap on this, you need it to flow.

Been lookin at the G Plus kits on ebay and Derale, but the Derale kit does not come with braided hoses.

Just for comparison, anyone here using a oil temp gauge on a lo deck without any fill? Would be nice to see a normal temp number.

Re: Oil cooler kits - 05/30/18 11:45 PM

Dumb question probably, but why did you decide to run a filled block on a car you said would be 99% street driven?

Re: Oil cooler kits - 05/31/18 12:17 AM

Well, not a dumb question at all. Because i wanted to run it hard and not break the #1 cylinder which soniced quite thin. I wanted to sleeve it,but shop suggested filling it. They filled damn near to the deck.

Not a complete kit but a good cooler and fan for the money. -10 an male fittings. If you want to activate the fan off of oil temp you would just need a thermostat switch for your temp range and relay to power the fan.

Re: Oil cooler kits - 05/31/18 12:23 PM

I’ve been considering running and oil cooler on my 65
Never thought about a fan. Thanks for posting this.

I run a remote oil filter due to clearance issues.
I assume I can plumb the cooler into the remote filter lines - but should it be plumbed before or after the filter ?

I run -8 (1/2”) lines. Should they be larger ? M63HV pump, 1/2” pick up 7 qt pan

Re: Oil cooler kits - 05/31/18 02:41 PM

I dont know whats really required for hose size, but im concerned about oil flow and dont want to destroy my new engine like the last one. Seems like -8 would be plenty.

The highest fill on a B/RB should be just below the bottom hole on the water pump and parallel to the deck any higher than that the block becomes a real nice boat anchor!

Re: Oil cooler kits - 05/31/18 03:04 PM

I believe its 3" below the deck surface. not sure where that puts it to the water pump level. Highest fill i ever seen.

My old 518 C.I. 400 pump gas stroker motor, 4.375 bore, ran real close to the water temps(160 to 200 F) up here in the summer after driving 25 to 40 minutes shruggy

Re: Oil cooler kits - 05/31/18 06:32 PM

I read some where 20-40* over coolant temp was normal. Yours ran really cool and shows i need a cooler especially on 90*+ days. Still looking for a complete kit but only finding cheap chinese kits or $700 kits.

I did find a Derale kit but does not come with braided hoses with AN fittings.

Re: Oil cooler kits - 06/01/18 03:56 AM

Dave, something like this (to suit your pump/filter) with a cooler like Andy's and 2 x -10 lines, or you hog them out too -12, easy and cheap.

Re: Oil cooler kits - 06/01/18 04:03 AM

Yeah. Been all over on my thoughts with this cooler. I have also been looking at a Derale kit and buy the black braided hose desperately. I can get the kit for about $150.

Re: Oil cooler kits - 06/01/18 04:53 PM

Gonna give Derale a call this morning and find out what is needed in a plate cooler, hose size and fan if needed for my combo.

Re: Oil cooler kits - 06/01/18 05:10 PM

will a remote cooler work better than a in radiator cooler?ive always been parinoid of aftermarket rads ever since my beecool high buck rad ruptured and filled my tranny with water.
Posted By: mopar dave

Re: Oil cooler kits - 06/01/18 05:44 PM

Dont think my radiator has those options. Derale suggest a 25 row cooler rated at 46000BTU with -8 fittings mount tight to the radiator. No fan up front.
