Good Job. This is the 'peeling the onion' approach to finding the weakest part in the search for higher performance. More money and more muscular hardware is the solution but You know that. Good looking car. Keep Going!

Hey Thumper, what has been done to your 8-3/4 to make it live??
Thinking about ours, nodular, back brace, etc.?

I'd think the gear box took out the rear end. All I saw was a chipped tooth on the gear.

I would bet on the rear taking out the trans. Sudden rear lockup for an instant can strip the planetary splines, take out the sprag?

yeah we put used gears in the dana and didn't notice any stress fractures or cracks but they went. they were set up by a diff shop with a good rep. sometimes [censored] happens i guess. thats racing. she already back up and running. this was two weeks before MATS. we thrashed and made the race.

Knock on wood I hold my breath every time my son leaves go of his transbrake in his Duster. We both know with 1.30 sixty foots and weekly Racing his 8 3/4 is being pushed.

I don't keep track as I'm not a Pro drag racer or bracket guy but more than some slower cars who kill their 8 3/4's in short order and again, who cares and all good on my end cos I KNOW what I have and I've tested 100+ carbs on my car and drive it like at the track to properly verify afr's and power but must say, my motors tired and time for a freshening............

Re: 440 Dart Carnage ! Bye Bye 727 - 05/21/18 07:16 PM
I don't want to sound like a jerk but if you have a car that can run in the 9's and use a transbrake at a track and the car hooks up, a 8 3/4" rear end will brake.
I'll even through out a number, whithin 15-20 launches.
Foot driving will keep them alive, Brett Miller is proof of that.

Totally agree and probably my saving grace as well as Bret and other FAST azz cars and a 9" will be the rear of choice when the time comes to step up............

Re: 440 Dart Carnage ! Bye Bye 727 - 05/21/18 11:41 PM
The worst beating happens in the first foot or two. I would have to think a very efficient converter behind a high torque bigblock is the toughest on the ring and pinion, if you don't use a brake and it hooks hard.

Re: 440 Dart Carnage ! Bye Bye 727 - 05/22/18 02:13 AM
I might be wrong but looking at the ring gear, it looks like trans locked up first and that broke the ring gear.

I've been running my 8 3/4 with a alum center
for years.. the car is light.. leave the line
at 5600 rpm shift at 8200.. I broke a totally
stock one when a cap broke(thats when I changed
to the alum center.. weight is the killer
EDIT
every launch running a trans brake

8 3/4 have their places.. let's face it if you're making a fair amount of power in a heavy car it won't last very long on a decent track..💣

Posts like this could go on forever and are a waste of time. Some cars sit in the garage for years without hitting the tracks so unless you have some numbers on passes, et’s, weight, etc etc etc it’s “fake news”.

It is funny how some go rounds for years and some break in the burnout box first time out......
I once saw a Falcon do a burnout and spit the pion and driveshaft from his 9" Ford twenty feet past the starting line. So I suppose all big pion 9" Ford's are junk all so?

I ran a 8.750 for a lot of years and everyone said that it won't hold and will break,,one year at Norwalk in the middle of eliminations it said good bye and spit a tooth out of the rear of the housing,, ruined my day, but they were right, eventually they will break, just a matter of when.

Racers can break ANYTHING. Back when my Daytona was running 8.60's I lite both stage lights at Norwalk, floored it, and left go of the trans-brake button. The 9 inch rearend broke and never even moved out of the stage beems. I'm gonna say I had about 1100 runs on those gears and they were in the car when I bought it.

I had a 31 spline Ford 9" in my 440 Demon. MILD engine.
I took out 5-6 rear ends before I gave up.
WAR cases, nodular cases, new gears every time, set up buy 4 different guys.
No Ford 9" rears for me.
I know they work for lots of guys. I'll pass though...

I ran the same 4:56 powerlock 8.75, with 4 wheel line locs and T/A 5400 flash at 3150 lbs, for 18 years and over 4,000 passes. I never tried it with a trans brake, too scared.
