FIBERGLASS HOOD W/HINGES - 04/11/18 03:33 AM

I have a FB hood for my '65 dart. Its a pin on style Any way of hinging it at the back and then use a pole to keep it open. Any way of using the stock hinges and the factory torsion bar set up?

You probably could glass something to the bottom of your fiberglass hood to bolt your hinges to. I was going to use a piece of wood fiberglassed on with J bolt's going through it and have nuts to hold the hinges to the hood . Lift off hoods are not designed for any spring pressure , Loose the torsion bars and you'll be OK

On my Fury I hinged the fiberglass hood, you are in luck because you have hinges that do not have tension like most later year hoods do. get rid of the hood torsion bars and make a pair of gas struts (hatch back) lift struts work.

Sorry no pics on this computer to share.

I made mine so I could hinge it.. I like a
single stainless tube for a strut rod so
I did it that way... this was a pin on hood

I bonded my fiberglass aar cuda hood to a steel hood inner structure with 3m adhesive. You can remove a lot of the inner framing also, but it really doesn't weigh much. Will use hood pins but will also have a safety latch just in case I forget the pins.

If you want to use just a hinge... using a 2 part adhesive, you can bond metal to the glass and will be very strong.

You just use the outer section of the frame or as much as you want... will fit like an oem hood.

I bonded on some aluminum 2.0 x2.0 inch wide and tall T shape on the bottom of my fibreglas race lift off hood on my old pump gas Duster and use bolts to bolt them to the stock Duster hood hinges so I could use a sawed off broom stick to hold the hood opened devil
That worked well up

I had given thought to using factory underhood frame. Getting hard to find a hood that isn't twisted or so far away that the freight costs more than the hood. I like the ability to have the factory hinge. At a quick glance the factory hinge would make the hood look stock. Structurally speaking, aluminum tubing stronger than solid wood of the same dimensions? Since aluminum oxidizes quickly, do you scuff then clean and epoxy for the best results?

On my hood I used 2 3/8 bolts on each side.. I
milled a slot in the alum so the nuts could
slide some.. I painted all that stuff then I
glassed it to the hood.. I did it so the glass
and alum came out level om the hood.. when it
all dried I bolted the hood on but left it
just so it would move some.. once lined up just
tightened it tight.. I had to add a washer on
one side to line up the hood
