I tried it out with 100hp jetting Sunday night.

So.much.fun!

Make sure you adjust your timing to 70º BTDC and get that Racepak installed. Oh, and don't forget to rip up the seat of your 4-wheeler... laugh

Tested on the street. Will get track numbers in the next few days.

Shooting for high 7's, low 8's. shock

I hope you're joking if you put the plate on the '63 Dodge OR mean in the 1/8 mile. Otherwise, stack 2-3 more of those plates up there and cut a hole in the hood for clearance.

Realistically, my advice would be to run better gas than you need, retard the timing about 2-degrees per 50hp nitrous (roughly) after the first 100hp and make SURE you have way more fuel delivery than you think you need. A window switch with a timing retard hooked in with the "loud button" is a good idea in my opinion.

Back when I was racing my 63 Ply we were running 11.00 consistently, we then turned the bottle on and went straight into 9.70-9.80, that was with a 150 shot. What 10's ?
As said +fuel and -timing, but also consistent bottle pressure @ 950+- each pass.
Are you changing diff gears ? We went from 4.56 to 4.11, mph was up about 15.

Have fun.

I've been off the bottle since 93. One day at a time... I too thought I could manage it... "that won't happen to me" I told my friends. Soon off came the power shot system for the 300hp Top gun plate. Out of nowhere we suddenly rules the streets in the small town in which I lived. I found myself in a dark alley shouting for Ray to come fill my bottles!!! Melted spark plug electrodes... I even rolled a set of rod bearings in from the bottom of my poor bottle fed 340 just to get me though the summer. Luckily family and friends stepped in before I hit rod bottom... it hasn't been easy. it's still tempts me when I'm playing around in the garage. I swear I drop a Jegs catalog and it will sprawl open to the NOS systems.......

LOL, yes joking!

I have a supplemental fuel cell mounted up front with electric pump supplying only the nitrous fuel solenoid with 91 no ethanol. More than 6° of timing pulled currently.

Running 3.54 rear gears and low 11's consistently n/a as well.

Used a warm water bath to get the bottle pressure where it needed to be..

The gears you run doing your low 11's are no good when you run the bottle unless your only going to go 1/8 now. What RPM are you at low 11's ?

Buy a bottle heater and pressure gauge.

5600rpm across the stripe. Tractor engine limited to 6400. Already put a good pressure gauge on it and looking at bottle heaters...

J Body...that's hilarious!

hemi-itis...you detonated the snot out of that thing.

GY3...do you have a regulator on the nitrous fuel side so you can adjust the fuel pressure?
Your 3.54 gears should be fine IMO.

Gearing/trap rpm is definitely something to watch for, I went from trapping at 6700 n/a to 7150 with an actual 116hp increase in power, 3000lb car 4.88's/32", 8" 4800stall, and went from 10.7@125 > 9.96@133.9.

Got NOS. It's addictive.

We all use it around here my buddies Cutlass goes 10:30's on motor & has a best of 8.24 on spray (two foggers).

I might be fond of it as well.

GY3 I'm anxious to see your results! I've always wanted to try a small kit.
I don't know if it would make my 9.5" converter slip even more, or maybe help lock it up better in high gear.

A couple of street racing friends of mine wanted me to put a plate on The MoPig (actually, one of them wanted me to go w/ a fogger for the shock effect when the hood was up). Jeez... and I think I'm broke NOW. eek

Re: Finally got a small plate nitrous system installed. - 03/31/18 05:12 AM

Cold and windy, tried one pass and spun hard to a 1.78 60 ft.

It did an 11.32 @ 125mph. Best mph ever just spraying in 2nd and 3rd gear.

Lots of other car breakage and track cleanup for a transmission.

We'll get a warmer day and get it figured out.

Re: Finally got a small plate nitrous system installed. - 03/31/18 02:26 PM

When I put nitrous on my old 360 it spun most every pass. I was running some ET street bias ply and I didn't know much about chassis setup etc. My ET streets were really worn out and a friend gave me some 26x10 slicks he had sitting in his garage for ages. I got them mounted and the first pass on them it went a 1.53 60ft from what was normally a 1.75 with the tire spin. That didn't help the nitrous addiction one bit lol.

Re: Finally got a small plate nitrous system installed. - 03/31/18 03:27 PM

I never had any issues with N20, not even a tipped plug, either in my stock-ish 340 car or the 440. No traction issues with stock leaf suspension on the 340 '71 Cuda, ran GY 10x28's, hit it with up to a 250 shot which actually only gave me a 167hp increase as those kits were well rich on the fuel side in those days and we (or I) didn't know better then, went from 12.4@108 > 11.01@122+, all in off the line. Different ball game today, you gotta be on it with total timing with the cleaner tunes or you'll mess up.

With a 100 hit off the line it took excellent track prep to get mine to stick on radials. I ended up with a small progressive ramp and a slight delay to get it consistent. I could use some better shocks and some more time to tune the suspension, but last couple times out I only got 2-3 passes all night...

Re: Finally got a small plate nitrous system installed. - 09/12/18 11:23 PM

I posted results elsewhere but figured this thread was too good to let die and needed updated.

We ran on a very hot night with a DA near 4000 ft. I did a n/a pass and it was an 11.59...right where my Virtual Dyno app said it would/should be.

I kicked out roughly 6° of timing, adjusted the idle and opened the bottle.

It ran an 10.69 @ 128 mph! It was actually a little faster than what Virtual Dyno predicted for a 150 shot.

Very happy with the results and looking forward to Fall weather. It should have some easy low 10's in it in good air!

I figured it was time for an update on this thread.

We've been running the spray for quite a while now and have never so much as nipped a plug.

I'm up to a 250 shot now and and have upgraded the ignition so I can pull timing from the cockpit and I installed a bottle heater powered by a DeWalt cordless drill battery.

The car has run a best of 1.36 60 ft. and has been 10.01 @ 133.

Having a blast and working towards that elusive 9.

The limiting factor is the nitrous 'noid right now. A 250 shot is as big as she will go. Probably a good thing! grin

I bought a plate kit for mine too, planning on only 150-ish as I'm worried about blowing through the converter, and also the fuel system. lol

Going to try to hide the solenoids at the back of the motor like you did, I remember pics of yours in another thread.

Are you changing anything over the winter?

The plan is to pull the engine apart and look at bearings, main caps and block. The only planned change is going from .060 head gasket to .027 to bump compression ratio. Not interested in going too deep into 9's.

Here is a pic of the board we built to hold the cordless battery for the bottle heater. The dock was a 3D printed piece from Amazon.

I added little rubber feet like you use to mount an MSD box and painted it black.

Just keep inching up there and being careful and you will have your 9s no problem.

One of the guys I know from Drag Week has a small block in a 80s Grand Prix. Its 3700lbs or something crazy and has been 8.5 or 8.6 with a 42? inch small block. Lots of people give him crap but he reads plugs like crazy and just baby steps the tune up carefully. Years and years on the nitrous and now is well into the 8s and he hasn't torn up any engine parts. He is the model for patience on going fast but at the same time he has saved thousands on pistons compared to some people lol.

Got me excited this morning with your Hemi and nitrous. Had to add mine also. We all start with a 150 shot and it just snow balls from there..... I have 19 bottles, all out of cert but at No E.T. or no prep events no one checks certs or expiration on anything.

How fast has it been on that 150 shot?

I saw the Champagne Express at Roadkill Nights, absolutely love that thing!

GY3, how many steps colder on plugs do you typically go on the spray?

I went two steps colder and went with NGK. Everyone says the straps are easier to read and so far so good.

A little work over the Winter. Pro Power NX plate and larger solenoids. We built a different mount for these because these (larger) 'noids exit out the bottom.

Supposedly good for up to a 500 hp shot.

The 300 shot currently installed.

First test and tune is March 18th.

I did a little test hit on the street in 3rd at ~50 mph and it felt like getting rearended by a truck! grin

I like the solenoid mount. Does you car have the stock k member or is it a 66-70 k? Keeping the solenoids off of the carb studs makes life much easier. The fancy solenoid brackes that bolt to two carb studs are useless...I'd rather have zip ties.

If you have any orange paint left....the throttle bracket needs some : D. I think the AR brackets look better in color.

Yep, stock K-frame from '63. I considered swapping to the later K, but I like being able to easily access the bellhousing bolts and it has 52/48 weight distribution as it sits.

I was over here being jealous of all the room you have between the engine and firewall.

Do you put any additional weight in the rear?

Re: Finally got a small plate nitrous system installed. - 02/25/23 03:44 PM

It's amazing how easy the firewall moves back. A bottle jack on the K frame with a 2x4 across the firewall. 4x4 between the jack and 2x4. Go slow. It may buckle slightly. But it's easily fixed. Look carefully at my firewall. This goes hand in hand with making the tunnel larger. Makes maintenance much easier.

I need to address that. The 24 lb. NItrous bottle helps as does my "spare" 275 street radial on a steel wheel (55 lbs.)

I'd like to get some lead bars and bolt rhem above the rear bumper for when track prep is less than optimal.

Doug, your stuff is always so clean and well executed!

I just got caught-up in the thread, this is a nice upgrade. Is the goal to run in the 9's or to go as fast as you can? Are you 3700lbs? At some point the cam and exhaust system (entire) obviously will be a cork. Looks like 725HP and adding another 50 NOS? The extra NOS can't not make you faster. My only limited experience with stock block NOS combos was John Burdines 493 which was about 900HP (3450# 9.1 IIRC) and his lived for a bit.

I say it will be 9.99 and safety will limit me to that, but if all goes well I might try for a 5 in the 1/8th mile.

The exhaust and cam up to this point hasn't been a limiting factor as each time I jet it for a certain amount it runs the number and makes that power. Yes, the car is still 3,700 lbs. That's the beauty of power on demand. I can tool around with it at 600 n/a and only use it on occasion. I'm sure I'm testing the limits of the block, though.

A 9.99 in the 1/4 is a long ways off from a 5 in the 1/8.

Well aware. It's like 9.50's in the quarter.

I use this one:

Enter any increment and it will populate the rest.

I was referencing a 5.99 to be clear. Already been 6.30's.

My old S/P Cuda ran 5.50 at 125.5 MPH in the 1/8 mile at 3400 Ft density with 2500 Ft actual altitude at Madras drag strip in the summers, 8.86 at 150.2 MPH at Woodburn drag strip in late July several years ago with pump E85 in it at both tracks shruggy I did move the shift RPM at Woodburn from 7000 RPM to 7300 RPM (1.80 low gear powerglide with 4:56 rear gears and 15x33x15 bias ply slicks) and that picked the car up 2.2 MPH in the 1/4 mile, all the other numbers were almost identical between those two runs shock shruggy

I should have added it was a little weak in high gear according to the Wallace calculator shruggy
I think the best 60 ft. was a 1.23 in Yakima, WA several years back shruggy
I'm hoping the new car will do better, a lot better devil luck

OK nice. Agreed, I'm sure you're testing the limits of a stock block when on NOS but, that's not telling you anything you or 'we-all' don't know. Did you do some upgrades the engine itself? The MPH doesn't reflect 600HP at 3700lbs if you go by Wallace, which I like.

We can rebuild it. We can make it better than before. Nows a great time to start the next build as it takes longer to get everything now.
