It is home!

It is home! - 03/27/18 05:47 PM

Went out this weekend and picked it up. It is now at my shop awaiting reassembly. It will never be as fast as it was when Mike raced it, but it will be a nice, safe, fun bracket car. I have a motor to put in it that should make it a low 14/high 13 second car. I have 2 904's done by Keith Long, and my buddy Patrick Teig is going to move the seat back so I fit better.

Mike left everything in the car when he parked it. Air shifter, delay box, playback tach, Accusump, aluminum driveshaft, and Cheetah shifter. All the nuts and bolts are in bags and boxes in the car.

I'm off work next weekend, should be able to at least get the motor and trans in.

Yes. Mike parked it when he bought the V/SA car about 12 years ago. It sat on stands covered up in his shop since. After the 2016 season he was done and had me help him sell everything.

Re: It is home! - 03/27/18 11:27 PM

Before Mike retired I was selling off all my Slant stuff and collecting parts to put a small block in the Daytona. When my wallet gets healthy again I will resume that path.

Nice, I always liked the Daytona if you ever decide to part with it.

Re: It is home! - 03/28/18 10:04 AM

I'd like to sell it, but I probably have 3 times what it's worth in it. Bright side is that it's paid for and doesn't eat anything sitting there. boogie

One from Mokan when Mike was still racing it. That's Mike looking at his weather station. The late Dale Rose and his Arrow in back. Rusty Heisten took the picture.

I fondly remember that car. I can say Ive seen it at Scribner, Marion, and Kearney.

I mis Scribner sooo bad!!

I remember a earlier 65ish valiant too that campaigned at those tracks with a /

That car is one of my favorites. Definitely different, and different is good!

Re: It is home! - 04/02/18 12:34 AM

Thanks DG! It really is a good solid little Valiant.

Found out Friday I was off today so I snuck down to the shop and dug out the motor that will be going in. It is an early Jeffrey motor and nothing too silly. 10-1, mild cam and some headwork. Should run in the 14's somewhere. boogie
Posted By: slantzilla

Re: It is home! - 05/07/18 12:38 AM

Made it down to the shop today for some quality time with the race car. (I'm 12 days on, 2 off at work)

Got the 727specialists trans in and all hooked up. Made cooler lines and all that.

Had moral support from my friends Bill Hoft and Wayne Venables. All in all, a good day. Hopefully next trip down I can get the motor in. punkrocka

Re: It is home! - 05/07/18 02:54 AM

Does this car have a rack?
Can you post more pics of the front suspension?
Posted By: slantzilla

Re: It is home! - 05/07/18 03:04 AM

Yes, the rack is inside the K member. It's still torsion bar with stock lower arms and tubular uppers. I may have a pic somewhere.
Posted By: RV2

Re: It is home! - 05/07/18 03:08 AM

Is that a travel limiter on the upper control arm?
Posted By: slantzilla

Re: It is home! - 05/07/18 06:24 AM

Limiter is a cable from the lower arm to the down tube. Mike pulled them all the way up when he put the car in storage. I have not let them down yet.

Here's what the front suspension looks like. Mike and Blaine made this themselves about 15 years ago. We are going to make new tie rods and steering arms, other than that I will probably leave it alone.

My buddy Patrick wants to build a coil-over front end based on Mustang II stuff.

Re: It is home! - 05/07/18 01:47 PM

Pretty cool, lots of engineering on that
Posted By: slantzilla

Re: It is home! - 05/20/18 04:40 AM

Got my Monocoque fronts on from the Daytona.

Got the motor in and turned it over on the starter. Made 50 psi oil pressure and no puddles underneath.

Progress is being made little by little. Since I am only off every other weekend I need to get it home so I can button it up. The wiring is horrid. Mike built great motors but by his own admission his wiring skills were lacking. At least there was no smoke released when I turned on the main. boogie

Re: It is home! - 08/26/18 05:05 AM

Got the car buttoned up Wednesday, and took it to my buddy Patrick this morning to move the seat back. Put in a new set of belts while I was at it.

Took it out to 41. Drove it up to Tech and back, then checked for leaks and such. All looked good, so off to staging. Not many cars, so I drove right into the right lane. Did a good John Force burnout and staged it up. Left decent, but I knocked the Cheetah shifter from 1st to 3rd. Still went 15:26@86. Also noticed I still had the scoop taped shut.

Opened that up and went up for another shot. Got all 3 gears this time and picked up a 14:25@94 timeslip.

Rain was on the horizon so I hurried up and made 1 last hit. Car sounded great, and went 13:95@95. I drove it up on the trailer just before it poured.

I was expecting the car to run high 14's so I am ecstatic to say the least. Got to give it just a little more love then off to Clay City in 2 weeks.

Re: It is home! - 08/26/18 10:02 PM

I found that if I held my hand out to the side and pulled it back and in toward me it works fine. However, I may put my PPP that I bought for the Daytona in it.

Or maybe bite the bullet and put the air shifter back on this one.

Decisions, decisions. violin

I love the older Winters, Fairbanks, T/A type shifters bow up
I have done the same thing on other brands and types shifters also shruggy
I learned a long time ago to either stiffen up the right arm a lot with my hand on the shifter or don't leave it on the shifter in 1st gear leaving the starting line shruggy work

Some pics from Clay City last weekend. 1 time run and went 3 rounds. Lost on the wrong end of a double break-out. Hossed the gas when I should have layed on the brakes.

2nd round-Scared my buddy Lou with a .100 light and he went -.009 red.

Staging lanes 1st round.

Re: It is home! - 09/23/18 07:04 AM

Just got home from testing at 41 tonight. After Clay City I brought my carb home because I thought it was not 60 footing for poo. Carb was clean inside so I changed the power valve which was leaking, and changed the primary squirter from a 28 back to a 25. I also took the time to physically check for TDC because I suspected I had a late model timing cover and an early style damper. My suspicions were confirmed, so I made new marks and got my timing down from 42* total to 34*

I have been running on either Marathon or Sunoco 93 with ethanol. Friday when I was at Casey's by my shop I saw they now have 91 with no ethanol so I grabbed some.

Weather was perfect tonight. Low 60's with low humidity. Much better than the crap I've been in where it was upper 80's with 60* humidity.

First pass off the trailer it went 13:37@100. That's .6 and 5 mph better than it's ever been.

Second pass was 13:05@103. Another .3 and 3 mph. shock

Last pass it was so dark I couldn't see the tach. I short shifted 2nd and 3rd and it still went 13:22@101.

All in all, with not much changing it picked up .9 and 8 mph, and it drove back up on the trailer under it's own power. To say I am happy would be an understatement. boogie

Re: It is home! - 04/22/19 04:49 PM

We still have our Slant series, but sadly just like this board many are getting older and retiring. I got my car when Mike retired, hopefully someone else will want it when I retire. We have new members pop in once in a while, and some actually stay around.

We did have 37 cars for the Clay City race last year, an all time record.

Re: It is home! - 01/13/20 05:45 AM

Have the car at Teig Chassis getting some steering updates. The car always drove great forward, but was a pita to back up. We installed a new rack, and made some new tie rods. Patrick has also put stops so the wheels can't flop all the way in when backing up. That became an issue at Coles County last year trying to get in the right hansd lane.

Old tie rod:

New tie rod;

Patrick also moved the tie rod below the steering arm. It really helped bump steer.
