My prochargerd 440

My prochargerd 440 - 06/06/08 08:43 AM

Hi all mopar fans.
I promised to make a tread about my new engine buildup, so here it goes
Engine: stroked 440 ( 500) wedge
Procharger: F1
Carburetor: Holley 950cfm stage 2 From PC Performance carburetors
Intake: Victor, Deep port match
Cylinder Heads: Bulldog performance stage 3 ported by Hughes Engines
Rotary: H-beam rods and Eagle crank (Hughes Engines)
Cam: Hughes Engines
Block mods: Half filled with Hard block and Hughes Engines main Stud griddles.
I run it on the Dyno a few weeks ago,
Maybe I Chicken out a little so we only pull it to 6000rpm and 1.1 pounds off Boost, but I didn’t want to risk anything on the dyno, so the number is ok anyway, 774,8 ft 5000rpm and 818Hp 5800rpm and then the valve start to open at 1.1pounds. But it we had to back off the timing a little because it was a bit rough on idle but it was about 840Hp with a little bit more timing. So now I installed a Boost timing master (MSD) so now I can give it more timing
I will post a video from the dyno as soon as my friend is done editing the video.
I want to make a small thanks list too. Thanks to

Hughes Engines, for great Engine parts (Kevin)

The Supercharger Store, for a great Procharger kit (Bob)

Daves, Race shop, for the custom made head gaskets (Dave).

Dyno, Test, for great work tuning the engine (Thomas)

Alucars, For the custom made intercooler and tubes (Fjodde)

And of course members at Moparts for good info and ideas

I try to post a few photos, feel free to post photos off your prochargerd cars too, I am interesting to see different ideas and solutions.
Thanks,
Toni

Is the intercooler an off the shelf unit? What kind of intake temps you had, and how did you cool the intercooler in the dyno?

The intercooler is custom made to fit my car, on the dyno we only used the fan that feeds the room with fresh air, so maybe it will cool a bit better on the road, the intake temp I don’t know but it would be interesting to know that, I will connect a temp gauge this summer.

Re: My prochargerd 440 - 06/06/08 09:45 AM

Our cooler is a little bigger, and at least that one keeps the intake temps pretty cool with 1.3 bars,r aising only 10c from start to finish, 55c max last summer.

Were you able to keep a decent A/F through out the RPM range?

Awesome car you got, want to trade with my 68 charger

Hi Rob!
The carb setup work wery good, the only thing we did with it on the dyno was jetting it up a little bit. The only trouble was with the timing, It was a bit rough on idle, but that is fixed with a boost timing master that I have installed now.

Originally we had some plans of coming to Sweden in to some street race, perhaps the Power magazines street race in the early August. I think they have a "heavy weight" class in there, where the VIP should fit just fine. but at the moment I'm not sure wether we'll really make it or not. Another initial plan was to participate in Veidec, in SG or SC, but that will most likely not happen.

nope just 5.5-6psi of boost. I sold the car a few years back. I cooked #3 once, forgot to turn on the electric fuel pump (it was a cast piston engine) Ran good. Plus I only had about $2200 in the entire set-up. If I do it again (or should I say when) I'm going with Meth Injection and 8-10lbs of boost and use good parts.
I hope you rear is a good strong one...I blew my 30+ year old 3.91's into about 1000 pieces on the 1st hard pass.

I know I must update my drive train, I have a new 8 3/4 center section on my work bench, but before I install it I must get me a pair of new axels and drive shaft, so must take it a bit easy until that .
Good luck with your engine project, post it here on moparts

Thanks,
Yes I run it with pump gas 98octan. I had to lower the compression from 11,5 to around 9,7 to prevent detonation when i installed the procharger,

Re: My prochargerd 440 - 08/22/09 12:48 PM

Little update,
Got me a set of new rims and wheels, Hoosier pro dot and Centerline warrior rims.
I am quite satisfied with them.
But now I have a new problem, When I give more than half throttle with the new grip I have, the rear wheels rub the inner fender, so the rear axle move a bit.
I have tighten all the bolts to the rear suspension/axle but It still move, so I am thinking off the Cal track system to my car?
Anyone had the same problems? Let me hear and se your solutions.
Thanks/

the springs only hold the car up so you may be able to adjust the height with longer shackles[edit] with the caltracs!.the shock will help the squating movement and plant the tires.did you try a stiffer shock setting?i am sure you know about springs.

Tell me about you rear setup..... I had 315/60/15 ET street radials in my chally with no rub issues at all.... was a custom cut dana 60 with dr diffs relo kit and a slightly rolled wheel lip... caltracs stock ride height!

with the standard 55" b body width and 3/4 relo kit still got 28*12.5*15 et street radials in with no issues...

28*12.5*15 ET streets with B Body 55" rear
15*10 5" backspace rim in all the pics!

29.5*10.5*15 MT Slick

315/60/15 ET Street Radial
1/2+ clearance on each side
The slicks and 315's come in at 13 5/8" total width!

Ya, my 11.5 Quick Time Pros did the exact same thing, Its too bad because they look great in there! but i drove the car about 10 miles and just about ruined the tires, the sharp edges of the wheel well trim sliced the side wall pretty good. Some guys have good luck using a B-body diff since they are an inch or two narrower and then use offset shackles. Then you can play with the back spacing and fit a tire that size in there.

Re: My prochargerd 440 - 05/25/11 03:57 PM

Finally I have driven my car on the 1/4 mile, first time ever , was a really nice experience, not only the driving but also meeting other racers.
I did 4 races, all of them was about the same, no traction, shifted manually from low to high, hit the revlimiter and it didn't shift up unless I let the throttle up a bit, on the way home it popped to my mind that the shift issue was due to the kick down. next time I'll remove the kick down wire, or just run it on Drive. also my stock leaf springs are done, I ordered cal track mono springs, and slicks will be on the car next time (Hoosier pro dot)

You CANNOT drive a car w/o the throttle pressure linkage..a.k.a. kick-down. YOU WILL smoke the trans. Before you race it again get the correct linkage. Or a Manual valve body.

P.S. i'd think you still left a full second or more on the table. My old junk yard 440 w/ 6 psi of uncooled boost went 12.0's at 114.

Thanks for the info , Then I'll leave the kick down alone and run it on D (drive).
Se how much faster it will go next time with slicks and the Cal track monosprings.

You should adjust it so it shifts where you want it to. Is it the factory piece? If so the best start is to line up the holes on the mounting bracket w/ a drill bit, then adjust the arm to the carb all the way up until it's almost touching, then adjust the lower arm to the bell crank. You also need a light spring from the bracket to the carb so the arm stays up on the carb linkage. The longer you make the arm/linkage the higher the shift point and quicker the downshifts will be. (I think) What stall and gear are you running? If you haven't upgraded your rear (axles, ring..pinion) I'd try not to load it up to much and come out soft then hammer it.

Re: My prochargerd 440 - 05/25/11 07:09 PM

I have adjusted my kickdown to be fully "open" on full throttle, I have the HEMI kickdown lever in the trans (5,0),
My stall is 3000rpm and gear is 4:10, and I have upgraded axles an pinion, so it should hold together
thanks for the tip

Ps: post photos of your ride if you whant

Cool car, het don't stay in the water to do your burn out. Swipe them roll forward then do your burn out. You did the whole thing in the water and you spun like a MoFo..

If i was you, i would sell the 8-3/4 and fit a slightly narrower dana, for the bs and to offset the cost of the dana.
I sold my 8-3/4 and it almost paid for the dana i put in and i've got far less weight and power than you have.
