History/photos of Lee Cameron's '70 Hemi SS/D DA Challenger? - 01/05/18 11:44 PM

Hello everyone,

I am currently restoring the 1970 Hemi Challenger that Lee Cameron of Sacramento, CA campaigned in SS/D and SS/DA in '70-'71. I have found a fair amount of history and photos on the car but I am always looking for more! Does anyone from the West Coast remember the car? Anyone have any cool stories or information?

I have basically zero information on the car from '72-'76. It ended up at Dick Landy's shop where they did a bunch of work to it and then sent it to a customer in Hawaii. There is a picture of it in street trim in front of Landy's shop (in '77) in Geoff Stunkard's book titled "Landy's Dodges".

I will attach a bunch of photos that I have of the car. If anyone out there has any information/pictures/stories, etc. I would love see and hear them!

Thanks!

Stan

If it was this car, there is a article in Car Craft April 77 about it. BUT that rag claimed that Landy started with a stripper 318 car. One would think the "former SS" angle would have played up if the case.

I have that article as well. There are a few missing pieces that I am working on filling in. I do know that the gentleman that owned the car in Hawaii had two '70 Challengers. One was the ex-race car and one was a 440 "U-Code" car. I have the information on both cars. Both blue, etc. I have found no information regarding a 318 car. I have studied the photos in that magazine article pretty closely. Most of the engine bay (with the exception of the 2-speed wiper), matches what my car looked liked almost 100% when I picked it up. Location of the ignition module, fuel filter, front engine mounts, flex fan, fiberglass fenders, rear mounted battery, manual steering, inner fender braces removed, etc. I am going to keep researching....

The research on the car will be as much fun as building it. I assume my restoring it, you are restoring it to "as raced" by Lee?

Is Mike Landy still with us? I know that Dick's son, Robert is still around. Have you contacted them?

Please keep us informed...LOVE the old race cars surfacing!

The research has been pretty fun! I haven't decided exactly which way I am going with the restoration. Probably somewhere between "as-raced" and a super heavy-duty "Day Two" restoration.

I have conversed a little bit with Robert. He remembers the car and thinks he might have actually done some of the work to it while it was at the shop. Pretty cool....
