INITIAL SHOCK SET UP................. - 01/05/18 05:51 PM

Jason Pettis turned down the upper and lower stock shock stud mounts to .0480 to fit in the heims on the Vikings and I made a bottom plate to raise em up 1 1/4 inches since they were a tad shorter than the Ranchos. So, being they have 6 in of travel I was thinking 1 1/2- 1 3/4 compression and the rest extension, sound right............. thumbs

Dom, if you expect a lot of extension on the hit, you could start there. Something made up to check max travel in both directions, like a rod with gromets on it and something attached to the axle end of the shock mount to push those gromets could tell you a few things.

The Ranchos had 2 1/4 compression and less than 4" of extension and had no issues using the tie wrap test for both extension and compression on the street so being these will be tighter, I will go w/the 1 3/4 then.........Thankxxx................ beer

Re: INITIAL SHOCK SET UP................. - 01/05/18 08:17 PM

Dom you have leaf springs correct?
Leafs tend to rise = body separation more than ladders or 4 links IMHO.

IIRC you have calverts bars on. Do they have less body separation than say SS springs?

Are you still looking for SA front shocks?

With six inches of rear shock travel I have set them at two inches from bottomed out (1/3 travel) at static ride height per instructions from Penske years ago on Skips car up
I have talk to several other shock companies about the initial ride height and they all basically said the same thing on a street and strip drag car shruggy

Dom likely little reason to need much more compression on your deal. Except maybe when seeing street duty. Our Camaro is mostly street driven and we have 1.5" com compression on the shocks and every once in awhile on the highway it will bottom out. I am willing to live with that. FWIW it is a Caltrac/mono leaf car as well. If it was more a street car I'd want more but IMO you will be fine. You need all the extension you can get with that set up.

Re: INITIAL SHOCK SET UP................. - 01/05/18 09:31 PM

Are the shocks mounted straight up & down or like factory angled ? an angled shock travels less VS suspension travel than a straight up & down mount, just sayin smile

Re: INITIAL SHOCK SET UP................. - 01/05/18 10:56 PM

6" is pretty short for a leaf spring car...

The shocks move MORE when they are mounted on an angle...not less, but not by a ton.

Depends on the angle...if you had 30 degrees, every 1.73" of vertical travel = 2" of travel along the angle. Less angle means less difference. So in the end it's not a huge deal, but might make or break you with a short shock.

And Don't Forget about adding Preload to the passenger side rear since in the vids your crushing the rear driver side tire and the passenger side tire appears to be floating, since you took that extra batt out of the rear.

You did do 3 changes though to lose your 60 ft. from 1.30 to 1.40

Batt remove.
Slick change.
Carb change.

Don't you know the rule of thumb, Change 1/one thing at a time, Cab and Pettis should of drilled that in your head by now.

Now, based on the blurry vids, your axel is rotating down on the driver side and up on the passenger side. Exactly how physics would have it do. Keep that into consideration after your initial mechanical shock set up. up

Hey now my Camaro has hybrid rear suspension Dana 60 and Caltracs. Did I mention its Panther Pink too smile Given those two items I feel its always on topic here

Dom I know you do and I know those beautiful Cali roads. We used to drive the Camaro 55 miles on I80 to get to Sac Raceway and rarely had an issue, you'll be fine as far as compression goes. 6" of travel is NOT a ton but IMO will probably be sufficient. Camaro only has 5 and its been 9.70's with its pump gas pig

I agree w/you on these things and have watched the "blurry" vid several times and see the same thing, the axle is teeter tottering and the truck shocks, soft sidewall tires and battery removal made it worse. 2nd batt is back, new bad ass shocks ft and rear and we will let er eat............The carb works great but does need some more street testing which I will do before we head back out in a couple of weeks......... beer thumbs New goal; 1.29 60 ft. 6.000 et at 113+ mph.............. drive

You have bugs, scorpions, and snakes. I'll take rain over fires and dust storms. Rain never scored cylinders and ruined paint. There is smoked and barbequed anything here, along with frosted taps for beer.

Re: INITIAL SHOCK SET UP................. - 01/08/18 06:36 PM

Well Dom, I can speak from personal experience that an encounter with a brown recluse will not end well. Only been in the hospital a couple times. My longest stay was courtesy of a brown recluse. Little guy kept me in the hospital for over a week and out of work for nearly a month. Not to mention the flesh I lost.

Back to your regularly schedule winter discussions....
