At what point should these be considered?

I learned the hard way. Do not just let your foot off the gas as soon as you go through the traps. I told the trans builder my story, to which he replied " most of them let go on sudden decel" I can't give you a HP #, but I can tell you driving style can help or hurt. My 2¢ merry Christmas!

Also, whenever they need replacing, as the oem are discontinued, and the aftermarket ones are all over the place on tolerance.

Do high line pressures play a role?

Which tolerances Leigh? Are they correctable?

End play, tip to tip and outer bore. None are correctable.

You can turn your converter back & forth and feel the the play where the snout goes into the pump. When I upgraded the drum I also bought the max lug pump gears. The lug is wider and fits tight into the snout.

Easier to put one in now then pull it out to put one in later .

as with many.... I upgraded when I broke a set, and last year I had my 727 out many times with weird breakage. Pro Trans was out so I ended up getting a set from TCS and had them fitted to my pump case. Knock on wood things have been holding up. It's been in my mind that changing to a clean N trans brake might have played a role in this.

I've never broke a set. Nor have I taken one apart with a broken set. Lucky? Can't say but I've built a ton of them. Currently running 2 cars with 850hp+ on stock parts, one has 500 passes.
