440-1 head upgrade

440-1 head upgrade - 11/07/17 09:20 PM

Gotta set of 440-1 325 cnc heads. They have the 2.19 intake valves of course.

I am wanting to go to the 345 and 2.25 intake valve.

Can that be done with the casting i already have.

If so who would be the best recommendation to do the work that can get the most out of the head.

Talk to Dwayne at Porter Racing Heads. He has a lot of experience with the Indy stuff.

iagree
The 2.25 valve and matching port work is as good as it gets. I tried a 2.3 valve and got zero gains and a $1,000 bill.
Do you have enough motor to warrant the extra head work?

572 4.5 X 4.5

A 572 could use A lot more head, that's for sure.

Might be cheaper and better to send them to Indy for their 345 program and then send them to Porter for the valve job and the fine stuff. Just my .02 because a person in the know told me that was the way to go.

I heard something about a 355 CNC program, but I don't remember where from. Anybody up on this? Is it worth the effort?

Not if they turn into sprinklers

We went from running 9.0's @148-149mph to running 8.90's @ 150-151mph in similar weather when we made the switch from 325cc 2.19 valves to 345cc 2.25 valves. So we picked up a solid .10 to .15 and 2 mph from the switch
This was in a 2800# Duster

I don't recall having a 325 and 345 in the shop at the same time, but my perception of the two different port configurations is that the 325 short turn shape and height is different enough from the 345, that I'm not sure a 325 can be made turned into the Indy cnc345....... Not exactly anyway.
It seemed to me as though the floor on the 325 was slightly lower, and rounder.

Might be worth a call to Indy and see what they say.

The exhaust ports and chambers are the same between the two.

I have put 2.25's in the 325's before, and that usually gets them to flow very closely to the 345's up til about .700 lift or so, then the 345 starts to pull away.

Depending on the overall combo....... Even 345's can be pretty small for a high effort 572.

I'll also add that if the OP's 325's are as delivered from Indy, if they are like every other set of those I've seen...... Then there is some flow left on the table.

It,s not really a high effort 572.

Pretty simple 572 with callie's crank,GRP rods and diamond flat top pistons with 13:1 compression and 4.500 mega block. Has a 715 in 700 exhaust camshaft and a ton of valve to piston clearance with 1.5 t&d rockers.

APD 1150 alcohol carb.

Dragster goes 4.83 to 4.86 depending on the weather and is very low maintenance.

I was gonna freshen the motor and heads this winter with new valves and had thought it maybe wise to go ahead and put the bigger one's in while doing it.

Re: 440-1 head upgrade - 11/08/17 06:01 PM

I would def put the 2.25's in when they get freshened.
Maybe try some 1.6 or 1.65 intake rockers too.

As an example-

A- ootb cnc 325, Indy valve job and valve
B- cnc 325 with PRH valve job and blend, 2.25 Manley valve
C- cnc 345 with PRH valve job and blend, 2.25 Manley valve

Lift--------A/B----C
.100---71.9/75.9----76.1
.200--142.7/153.7-153.8
.300--210.3/217.1-217.9
.400--268.3/275.1-277.1
.500--313.7/326.9-327.6
.550--325.0/343.2-345.9
.600--332.6/356.8-358.3
.650--340.2/362.3-368.3
.700--349.6/364.2-377.8
.750--355.3/371.5-381.7

I like the Manly Pro Flows. Gerald put them in my Cast Iron Indys.
I think you would see better results with 1.6 intake rockers

Just the intake high ratio rockers might work well to save a few bucks if you want.
