Who runs slicks on the road for dragweek?

Who runs slicks on the road for dragweek? - 08/20/17 05:54 PM

Trying to decide what I need to bring, the 8" stall doesn't seem trailer friendly. Will build a rack for back of car to haul extra parts, tires are big space hog so trying to decide if I can just run the slicks for the week. Rain will be a big problem.

Several do it but if you happen to get rain it will be a big problem obviously. I have done 5 drag weeks and I have run into some big rain but never for very long. That being said I run a regular radial TA on the road and don't sweat it if we do get rain. The last thing I want to do is put put for 200 miles at 25mph in the event of a large rain storm.

Don't ask me how I know but if your car has windshield wiper linkage under the dash give it a look while it is working. You wouldn't want it to snag a small wire and cause you to have to rewire stuff in the pouring rain under a gas station awning in nowhere cornville USA.

No wiper so not problem there lol

Budget keeps going thru the roof, so trying to decide where to spend the last of it lol

Wide band or backup tires and trying to load everything going to be fun with no trailer

I run bias ply Hoosier Quick Time Pros, for the whole trip. Same deal on the Gremlin, the Duster, and the Barnyard. No big deal until the rain comes...at that point we are limited to about 25-35, and very little steering or throttle input.

Are you asking about regular slicks or something like a ET Street tire?

I have a 68 Fastback and I manage to stuff my tires and everything inside, I think I had just a touch under 300lbs of cargo last year, I manage to lighten it every year. The problem I will have in the future is that I am now running a 28" tire and they for sure will not fit like I had my 26s. I am looking at a trailer or tire carrier for future drag weeks(sitting this year out).

My tires are 32" tall and section width of 16.5 they will take a complete tire rack just for them lol

I'm curious about the original converter comment. Is that due the added weight of a small trailer? I was imagining a 4x8, or 5x8 little box trailer.

just worried about building to much tranny heat pulling small trailer. Will get exhaust on this week and do some testing. My time frame is getting tight and budget get thin.

You damn sure dont want to run those slicks in the rain..
you wont make a 1/4 mile it the rain.. make a small open
trailer thats low to haul your stuff.. makes it MUCH
quicker to drop a trailer and be race ready.. the main
thing is its much quicker to be loaded and on the road..
I was out on the road the other day when it started to
rain.. pretty decent.. but at 50MPH I was starting to
skate around.. thats on a 295 ET.. at 45mph it was fine..
I have a small enclosed trailer that I built to haul the
stuff I want to.. on the trans temp I have no issues at

about 200*.. but once rolling it cools down to 180 or less
EDIT
Thats with a 4800 stall 8" conv

I got caught in the rain once on 10.5 slicks. Had to drive on the rough side of the highway just to keep going. Not good. For what slicks cost now I would try to save them . Put on a set of tall skinny street tires and hit the road without worry.

I ended up swapping my near new Hoosiers for the MT ET Street S/S tires last year, in a size I don't normally run, so I could have a tire with a little bit of tread. Didn't rain during DW, but on the way home I was able to cruise at 50mph in a downpour when I would have otherwise been sidelined.

A hitch carrier will be a challenge if you have the rear spring rate dialed...

Sure it could work with a smaller tire. Already have a new set that size ready to go on, thought I have them half worn out by now until the engine seized. Ok maybe the trailer if I can find one will work in time. Once the engine went thru my budget and time frame into a downward spiral realmad

The week itself ain't gonna be cheap either...

I care not recall what I spent in hotels, fuel and meals, not to mentions anything that comes up along the way....

This is what I built to haul.. all my junk fits
in and its light.. I built it this size to fit
my car and the trailer in my big trailer.. I
only have 1.5" so spare.. on this trailer I have
it so the back slides out for easy access to my
tools and parts

That I could tow

Already have the money for hotel, food and gas set aside.
Hopefully I can get exhaust welded together soon and do some longer road test.

I was gonna angle the front down to make less
drag but I changed my mind.. but then later I
changed my mind again.. I might still angle it
down... but I dont want to change tires on it
so IF I go(still a long ways back on the list)
I will just run the ET streets

M&H DR netted me 1.33 60 ft times

Trailers have ruined DW. I call it trailer week now
