Small Block head gasket?

Small Block head gasket? - 08/10/17 06:02 PM

Looking for best head gasket when going with aluminum heads/iron block?
Will be 10/10.5:1 compression at the most.
How are the Mr. Gasket 3211G?
I have a friend with a spare set, or will buy what is best for that purpose.

Thanks all!!

I've used the FelPro 1008 gasket (4.180" bore, 0.039" thick, 8.770cc volume) last few times, but this was an iron-to-iron application. Needless to say, very happy with them.

I too use the 2008 Fel-Pros a lot. I have slowly been switching some of my more serious builds over to cometics but that's not needed for your build.

Fel-Pro 1008 is best ... cost-wise and performance/assurance. MLS gaskets are excellent (and very expensive) but require extremely smooth surface finishes that most machine shops -- on average -- can't or won't perform.

Forget the MrG... you want dependable assurance... get the Fel-Pro 1008 which have a pre-flattened internal wire ring (for high compression sealing) that is wrapped in a Stainless Steel outside armor; also has excellent surface sealing. Torque loss is barely traceable... no need to ever re-torque (unless you want to).

I'm a former Fel-Pro engineer... I know whats' out there.

Is there any physical difference between the older 1008 that were like a bright blue color compared to the newer ones which are a darker blue? Or is that just a production coating change?

I have had great luck with the 1008. My current engine has cometics but we only went with them because they had the thickness we needed.

Ok so it sounds as if the Fel Pro 1008 is the best choice.
I got the Mr Gaskets reasonable,
It sounds like I should hang them up for back ups and buy Fel Pro??

Yep the Mr. Gasket MLS' instructions say surface between 10-30RA, which is pretty smooth. I wonder what a regular Detroit block would measure at? I mean there have been thousands of cars (Neons?) recalled to replace head gaskets and they were replaced with MLS gaskets. I can't imagine Chrysler using a gasket that needed resurfacing of the block and head.

I use the Mr. Gasket 1121G thin head gasket with no complaints.

1008's on my 10:1 408 magnum. One nice thing about the 1008's is they compress at .039 of an inch. That's near perfect for quench at zero deck with flat tops.
