Hey Guys, I'll try and keep this as short as possible. I've had my build going together for a while now. It's a 557 cube (4.5 x 4.375) Bill Mitchell block with port Indy EZ's. The motor is in the car is running well and my pro parts headers just arrived this week. So, I'll be headed to the track soon. Anyways the plan for this build was to upgrade the heads in a year or two knowing my EZ's are too small for the cubes. Well as luck would have it a deal came along now.... So, I bought a set of fully ported -1's flowing just under 400cfm. They will go on over this winter. Now... the fellow that found me the heads also has a couple 440-3 intakes. He feels one would work good on a motor of my size. Indy recommends this for much bigger engines. Thoughts? I currently run the 440-2.

The 440-3 is the 4500 version of the 440-2.

Are you certain you're looking at a 440-3, and not a 440-3X?

Yes the 440-3X should work for you at 557 cubes but it might not be the "perfect" intake. I've always made more power on my engines with Super Victor intakes. I've tried the 440-3X a few times but it never makes good power for me so I switch back to the Super Victor.

By the way, the EZ heads are not necessarily too small for your engine. I have EZ heads on my 514 and it makes 900 hp. So it all depends on how much power your are looking for. The -1 heads should make more power than the EZ heads on your engine but if you are running a .650 flat tappet cam or something like that then you won't notice any difference.

It is all in the combo, not the individual part..........

I've never tried the SV on a BB mopar, so I can't say how it compares to the 440-3X on a big cube combo............ But I do like the 440-3X on the 540+ cube builds that are going for 800hp+ and plan on running 7000+ rpm.

They're good for an easy 900hp with nothing but a mild gasket match....... If the rest of the motor is up to it.

That being said, I wouldn't be looking for a big gain over a 440-2 with a 4500 adapter.

Currently I'm running a comp roller with .75 int lift and good amout of duration and also the 440-2 with the 4500 adapter so maybe it's not the best choice

I did a back to back test(engine dyno) on my old pump gas 518 C.I. 400 stroker motor using a 400-2 with a 4500 tapered adapter and then a 400-3 with no spacer and finally a 1.5 inch tall Wilson aluminum reversion spacer. The 400-3 with no spacer made a tiny bit less HP and no torque loss or gain compared to the 400-2 with the two inch tall tapered 4500 adapter, adding the 1.5 inch tall Wilson reversion spacer onto the 400-3 intake pick up the motor 8 Ft lbs. and 12 HP at the same RPM with the same carb, jetting, timing and fuel on all three tests shruggy

Thanks Cab. At this point I guess it comes down to the price of the intake compared to the gain. Not to mention raising that rpm range. If I was going to starve the motor with my current combo I might be a little quicker to jump on the deal.

We ran a 3X on the 557 that used to be in the dragster with a set of Indy CNC -1's. Worked well for us. Was not super fast combo at 7.90's best here in Vegas but worked well.

Thanks Al. Maybe the proper investment would be on a good tunnel ram after I get the motor tuned with the single 4 or... just leave be.
