Video from tonight, and some carnage Followed. - 02/21/09 05:55 AM

Well, been making some changes to my car the past few weeks since I've been home and finally made it out. replaced the front shocks w/ a set of AFCO double adjustables, and added a set of Mufflers to it. Ran the best it has ran in years, only made one pass untill the carnage began. With help from Eric Paul(Irun6snd8th)and Troy, I tried some new stuff and finally got the car to react to changes, still waiting on my new torsion bars, but I'm convinced it's moving in the right direction...The first video it went 1.33 60' on a marginal track and ran the best it has in 2 seasons, 6.07 @112, left pretty dang hard...
Enjoy the video...

Second time run, was still in the wheel stand when I heard the ring and pinion come apart...this is the second set of gears I've broke in this Dana 60, and these are 4.30 Progears...Was told it did an even higher wheel stand in the second run...

Gonna replace the dana w/ a Ford 9" I'm done messing w/ this thing, this tranny has bolt in sprag and stuff, so kinda curious how that's gonna look...Then gonna work on the shock tuning a bit to calm it down, just happy it reacted to changes...

I'm down, but not for long, gotta keep pushing forward in order to make big things happen...

Make sure you use the absolute BEST parts possible with a 9".
I blew up a half dozen fresh Ferd 9" rears , both WAR and nodular cases, everything new every time, different brands of gears, different guys setting them up etc.... 31 spline.

This was a 3100 pound street car on street tires with a very mild hydraulic cam 440.

Nice leave/run. Sorry to hear about the gears.....I must be one of the lucky ones(so far anyhow) as my lowly 8 3/4`s still holding up running low 10` for years street/strip w/30 spline dutchman axles.

Its impossible....everyone here will tell you its impossible to break a Dana 60. Even one with pro gears, the girdles, and set up by a professional shop.

Ditch that heavy pig of a rear and put a real racing rear end in it and be done with it.

Thanks you all, was rather disappointing. I got a plan, and will be making some phone calls Monday morning, hope to be back out in about 2 weeks w/ a 4.30 geared 9".
Hey Kevin, give me a call today...

Nice video, car looks good, sounds good and I'm jealous of that launch! You've probably been asked a million times but what's the engine combo and race weight?

The car sounds nice and leaves the starting line well.

Sorry to hear about the Dana gear breakage. You are already changing, but for others here is my 2-cents:

Keep the backlash on the small end of the specs. Maybe a differential builder can make some suggestions.

To the purists, my Fab9 housing and Strange center section have NO ford parts! All are upgraded aftermarket for strength and reliability.
I have hundreds of 9.52-9.78 passes on the center, axles, etc. No problems! Don

What center section and parts are you running Don?

The first pic was on Rob's table @ LRT Chassis after he put the braces and 4 link brkts. Heres one when it's ready to go in the Barracuda! You won't be sorry!
IIRC mine cost about $2000-2500 with Strange brakes. Don

Strange aluminum center, the better pinion supp., 35 spl axles, 4.3 pro gears, the bigger bearings in the axle tubes, 5/8" studs, 1350 cm yoke. Stuff like that, and the price wasn't bad for a Fab 9, which is as strong as most of us will ever need. Don

What is done to the Dana other than the pro gear and I assume a spool and axles? Caps or cover with the support? The fab nines are nice, but the Dana is tough and you should not be having problems at your ET and weight. If you sell it off PM me, I am interrested.

Thanks, I'm thinking of giving it one more try w/ new builder. Your Car is Awesome, one of my favorites on here...

We run both 1/8 and 1/4 mile down here, most our bracket races are 1/8 mile, but the Divisionals and national events are 1/4. thinking of going back to the 4.56s though.

Thanks a lot guys, I hope to have the rearend and tranny out tomorrow night.

NO offense Curtis, as I say this from 30 years of racing, but, that launch is pretty tame. Something in the setup is hosed. I have raced / watched several thousand passes over the years, and find 2 ring and pinion failures with that car / Dana 60 combo REALLY SUSPECT. Go back to BASICS. Something is amiss.

I would have someone new set up the ring and pinion. I have seen a lot of "Thats close enough" setups brake tons of parts. Sounds to me like not enough preload on the carrier or pinoin bearings or both. Something is moving around. My car has been 1.26 60' with a brake on a Dana 60,4.30 pro gears and stock caps and bolts @ 3170#. Never worn a gear or broke one. I would'nt give up on the Dana.

I have owned 3 different drag cars with dana 60's and never broke a rearend. Last time out in the daytona (a lot lighter car)broke the ring gear on the ford 9". I always liked the idea of having a spare pumpkin to through in but guess what. I NEVER BOUGHT A SPARE ONE!!!. By the way the ford 9" had all the goodies.

Re: Video from tonight, and some carnage Followed. - 02/22/09 03:24 PM

Last night I was at dinner with some MoPar racing friends of mine. We discussed this post.
Both of them have Danas, one hasn't hit it with enough power YET. (he will soon) The other has a car similar to mine in power, trans brake, etc. he hasn't had any problems with his 60.
He bought the whole thing from Strange ready to go. So they must've set his gears properly.
When I built mine I was backhalving the car and going from 83/4 which I was breaking on a regular basis, especially when I went to a transbrake, even with a backbraced housing, tight setup etc!
I liked the drop out center of the 8.75, Rob @ LRT was doing the backhalf, suggested the fab 9 housing, I have had good service from Strange equipment so now I have 2 centers a spare or I can easily change to experiment.
The moral to the story is; I think either will work fine if they are setup properly!
You already have a Dana and if you know what ratio works best for your combo, stick with it and get it setup properly. I am sure you will have plenty of trouble free runs as others have!! Don
