Indy 4.84" Bore Space block question?

Indy 4.84" Bore Space block question? - 03/26/17 02:13 AM

Excuse my ignorance, I've had no experience with the 4.84" bore space stuff.

What crank goes in to these blocks, is it a 4.8" space crank with the difference taken up in the side clearance on the piston end? Or a 4.84" specific bore crank.

I wasn't sure when they designed these blocks if the main bearing saddles have been moved slightly or they've just moved the bores around.

Thanks in advance

The only cranks I have ever tried were the 5 inch stroke Callies. Indy starts the boring in the back and by the time you get to the front journal on the crank you have zero side clearance. As in cut the rods and start playing around with the bearings. If that 5 inch crank is "special" somehow I cannot find it as far as the rest of the block goes. The clearance just "stacks" back to front as best I can tell. Fun fun fun....

Hey Allan are you going to be needing a 4.84 block?

No, just a general question.

I suspected that was the case, I would have thought the difference would have been split from the centre cylinders, the 0.020" either side on 3 & 5, and the extra 0.040" coming out of 1 & 8.
Really sounds like an engine you'd look at piston guided rods in

Never seen one but, I was under the impression that these were custom, based off BBC style of aftermarket crank.

They use the same crank as the 4.800 block, the main saddles are in stock position. The center 2 bores are moved .020 and the outer bores are moved .060 from the centerline of # 3 main. You can use a Chevy 2.200 rod and in most cases there isn't any problem when using a full round skirt design but if your using a inboard pin boss or box style piston we go with the .927 pin and a narrower pin end on a aluminum rod.

up

I was thinking about an old b1 pro stock stuff... I could be wrong there too. Was it called a phoenix or something. I'm probably getting of topic, sorry.

You are correct, the block used with the B1-TS heads was the Phoenix block. They weren't a deep skirt blockand featured a splayed 4-bolt cap.

Thanks for the replies, with all the talk about the Goodwin 600-13 heads, I was curious about it all.

Donovan has a block as well. Seen a few TS versions with one.

Monte ran built his TS engine with a Donovan block. I wonder what will come of that?
