468 ci sb- Single plane vs Tunnel ram - 03/13/17 12:58 AM

Hey folks, looking for some help/opinion on swaping my 360-3 for Pro Dominator.

My current combo is as follows;

468 ci
360-3 w/ 1050 dominator
360-1 245 rp
12.4-1
Solid Roller
724/693
277/284 @ .050
110 lsa installed at 106
1 7/8 tti

904 / 5200 stall
3.91 Gear
3200 lb a-body

I would like to run the pro dominator on this combo.
I have talked to a few very knowledgable people on this, and as expected the opinions vary.

First question is, will I see gains going to the w2 pro dominator on this combo ( I realize we will have to change to rec port)

Second question, what size carbs should I use.

Looking forward to the responses on this.

Les.

I would consider changing the cam at the same time. You can use less duration to get the same peak RPM. If you don't get a cam for a TR, you will see a soft middle RPM, and a very narrow power curve. A tunnel ram can and will make more power everywhere if the cam timing is correct.

I think tunnel ram intakes can run a narrower LSA to keep them from making power past peak any further than you need to.

I'd do it in a heartbeat. Also, thumperdart or jmark should go through the carbs.

Once you open the ports at the flange to match the heads, you'll need to correct the taper in the TR ports all the way into the plenum. Once you do that, it should work really well.

I would use 2 950's or 2 1000 carbs but you could try 2 edelbrock 800 carbs....believe it or not they work very good in TR applications.

The cam looks good to me, but what do I know...

I'm a big fan of tunnel rams, although not that involved with small blocks. I really liked the old 660 center squirters when I ran a 440 cube 440 block and Weiand TR. My new build is a 500 cube 440 with a TRE sheet metal manifold and 2 850's with the choke horns milled off. If you get the 660's look for the version with both front and rear metering blocks. The later ones had a metering plate style (4160).

Leave the cam as is.. open up the intake
and you might change the rear gear
EDIT
A pair of 1000 cfm or 1050s

Thanks again for the help.
Seems to be a big spread of opinion on carb sizes. I've been told everything from 650's right up to 1050's.
If buying new, unless I'm missing something (which is very likely!!) it seems it would make sense to go as large possible (without sacrafising performance). This would give room for growth in the future.

Where will it be shifted and what fuel. Had good luck lately w/boat TR's but prefer a single and if you look around, you will see MANY fast cars w/one carb and in your case maybe a 1250 HP-Dommy........... thumbs

Re: 468 ci sb- Single plane vs Tunnel ram - 03/13/17 08:56 PM

Dom;
I've been shifting it at 7000 but was not able to get it out to the track last year due to a few issues whitch we are rectifying now.
It runs on run pump gas.
To be honest, I love the look of the pro dominator and I have one. If it will gain me some performance to do the swap, I would like to.

That's what Holley used to call their tunnel rams.

work

What block?
Is that a 2.0 Rod crank?
Pump gas at 12.4 CR?
Any projection on HP?

Yours sounds nice. up I am working on a similar slightly smaller motor, but 7000 is too risky for my application

Thanks!
-Ritter aluminum block.
-Yes. 2.0 rod BPE crank
-Yes, been running 94 octane pump gas
- we did dyno it, was up over 700. Will get it to the track this summer and figure out where it's at.

Yeah, I hear what you are saying. That's the reason I'm asking for opinions. If it's gonna make me go backwards, no point. If it's gonna work better and look cool, I'm good with that!

Re: 468 ci sb- Single plane vs Tunnel ram - 03/14/17 03:31 AM

My high 9 second 73 Dart was a good tenth and a half quicker with the TR than a single Dominator. I loved it, seemed more streetable and the 60 foot was the same or better than the Dominator.

Re: 468 ci sb- Single plane vs Tunnel ram - 03/14/17 03:56 AM

I have a W2 416 with the Indy-3 intake. It is fuel injected with a 1000CFM throttle body on it. It is actually pulling some vacuum on the throttle body at wide open. I bought a nice W2 Pro Dominator from a moparts member to have converted to EFI so I can add another 1000CFM throttle body.

Looks like it makes sense to move forward with it.

not sure if you will see gains with the t/r was the indy ported ,i think if you port a 772 and converted to yours it will make more power or a sheet metal the rp s move some air 360 cfm just my 2 cents.

Les I have the same combination with W9's and a TR with two 1000 CFM throttle bodies. It really picked up when I changed from one 1250 CFM Throttle body to two 1000. Feed the animal.

Be hard to get cross section you will need.

Shoot for 4.250-4.500" in the Plenum (It will be paper thin and Or need weld at that point)

Ian, my intake is not ported.
After a discussion I had with Brett a while back, I was planning on getting rid of my 4150 to 4500 adapter and opening it up for the dominator.
But every time I walk into my garage I see that pro dominator tunnel ram sitting there. Seems a shame not to use it if can be made to work well.

thank you .nice set up you have ,just keep a eye on your fan have seen a few brake or fly apart ,your hogan intake is way better than any holley t/r .R3DART but i think with some port work the holley may get close to the indy unported and a ported one will give you around 25 hp more,if you are chasing hp then there is only one way to go .up to you my friend
