Stock replacement converter stall?

Stock replacement converter stall? - 03/02/17 04:03 PM

I see in the Dacco catolog there are low and high stall converters available. I have a 1987 904 lockup trans and converter and will be running it behind a 5.9 Magnum junkyard motor with a carb and air gap intake, recurved stock type distributor, 1 5/8 headers and a XE roller cam with 278/ 278 / 106 lobe seperation cam, that has 225degrees @.050 . lobes are 3344b Comp.
I would like input from anyone with experiance running a stock converter with a 5.9. I may chose to bracket race this setup and am not concerned about a great ET, just a consistant launch with 3.55 gears and 26 inch tall slicks, aprox 3200 race weight. The torque range of the cam is supposed to be from about 1800 rpm and up.
This is going to be a low budget deal, but at the low price of a replacement type converter, I would be willing to put one in, either in lockup or non lockup type by changing input shafts. What results have you had?

The Dacco catalog lists Hi-stall and Low-Stall versions of most torqueflite stock converters. Dig around the catalog and find the Hi-stall variety you need.

JCCuda posted about his cool little 70 Valiant 4 door that weighed 3,320 with Driver and ran a cheapo Dacco converter. The best run was 11.96/113 but it typically went 12.0's in decent air. Typical 60'was low 1.70's

- 40 over 360 short block. decked, 10.51comp
- reversed cast dished pistons, good rod bolts.
- J heads pocket ported with 2.02 int. valves and 273 adjustable rockers.
- Old Manley cam. .443" lift 224@.050.
- LD340, 1" 4 hole spacer and a Vac. 750.
- Hedman 1 5/8" headers, 3" exhaust with ultra flows dumped at the axle.
- 904 trans with a (cheap)Dacco 2,400 stall replacement converter
- 8 3/4, 3.91's 8"x 26" slicks.
- 6 cyl. torsion bars and Competition Engineering Adjustable front shocks
- 002/003 SS springs with MP 50/50 xtra long rear shocks

All 79 Chrysler 300's came with a 727 and a non-lock up convertor marked "Hi stall". Believe it was around 2300 rpm stall. This with a 3.23:1 rear gear.

my stone stock 1978 E58 cop 360/727 came with the non-lockup hi-stall converter. it stalled at 2550 in my 38 plymouth coupe with L78 mcCreary's and a 3.91 gear set. i don't know the weight of the car,[it was over 3100 with me in it as i remember right] but best run was 14.99 @ 98.76mph [salem ohio, night air].
