440 Best intake choice for 10 second car - 02/17/17 04:58 PM

Looking for some experience in folks that have used different 440 Intakes. I'm looking to use a 1050 Dominator on a stock stroke 440. The car currently has a M1 single plane with the spreadbore pattern. The car uses a 590 cam, 180* cylinder pressure, 11to1 , Indy EZ heads. runs 10.35 now with a 1050 4150 carb and above intake.
I have looked at the Trick flow, Indy, and Edelbrock Victor, I believe I want to go with a 4500 flange intake for the intake, and new 1050 dominator. Anyone have experience they can share, and what would help the car the most.
Thanks.

Are the EZ heads standard port or MW port? If they are not MW port then you might consider opening them up to MW port and using a MW size intake. I'd recommend the Super Victor if you can fit it under your hood.

If you don't want to open the heads up to MW size then I'd use the Mopar Performance M1 4500 intake.

I use Indy's intake with 4150 2in adapter for 1050 Carb best time in Sig

I'd run the Victor on the 2" adapter heavily blended and an HP-1050 Dommy................

Car weight, gearing & tire size, launch & shift RPM, converter stall, etc., would also be helpful to know.

2800 lbs. 4.56 gear, 4800 stall, 15x33x15 rear tire. shift at 6500, launch at 1800. They are EZ heads.

If they are standard port EZ heads then your biggest gain would be opening them up to MW size. Once you do that you could bolt on a Super Victor + 1050 Dominator and go to town.

A buddy of mine Mick who posts here ran a similar set up as you on his Dart, 3150lbs, 440ci, 12.7:1, .590 cam, Eddy 325cfm MCH heads, Eddy Victor int, with 2" adapter and a 1050 Dom, 4.56 gears, 13x31's, 5000 stall, ran 10.1's@130+, the Dom picked up some mph over his 950DP but didn't ET much different, shifted at 6350, trapped at 6800. Had the opportunity to try my old CC .650/290@.050 sft cam I ran but it never happened, personally I think he would've been in the 9's with that?.

My dad's 440. 12 to 1, Indy SR heads, standard port. .630 lift Hughes solid flat tappet cam. M-1 with 2" adapter to a 1050. 2800lb challenger, with a 5200 stall and glide. 10.0 to 10.20 anywhere.

We added the Indy 4150 intake, and kept the 2" inch adapter. We ported the tops of the intake ports to match the height of the MW intake. Car started running 9.70-9.90 anywhere, and wanted to be shifted at 7200 instead of 6700. Night and Day difference.

Std port EZ's pick up 20-25cfmmjust by opening them up to mw size.
As was mentioned, then you can use either the Indy single plane or Super Victor.

However, I don't think you'll see the same amount of gain Billy did with their 512.
The std port window is more of a problem as the motor gets bigger.

If staying with the std port size, an Ede Victor with some plenum work and the HVH super sucker 4150/4500 adapter is a good combo on a stock stroke 440.

Re: 440 Best intake choice for 10 second car - 02/18/17 08:39 AM

If both carbs. flow exactly as advertised, 1050 CFM , I don't see any gain from going from a 4150 to a 4500 carb. unless one is not tuned as well as the other one confused
As far as the intake swap you may pick up some HP or torque or move the peak RPM around some shruggy scope up
Your wondering about making it better, the only way I know on how to find that out is to do it thumbs

Well I only managed a lowly 10.71 NA, many things done wrong with the car back then having learnt what I have today, prob a 10.5? in it but spec was>

3000lbs at the line, home built stock CR 440-6 motor + 2.14/1.81 906's, that cam I mentioned above (plan was to up the CR to 12.5:1)..Team G Dom with adapter to 850DP, 2" f/wells, 4800 stall, f/brake, L/bars-coil-overs, 14x32 Hoosiers (4psi), 4.88's, stock front end with gabriel 90/10's, car left soft except for 1 time when we had 7psi in the slicks due to puncture repairs, then it left real hard and broke the Tach mount and tach ended up in my lap, still didn't suss it!!!
+ a 140 shot to 9.96.

They don't, from the carb airflow tests I've seen. A 1.59 x 1.75 4150 vs a 4500 1.72 x 2.00... NOT apples to apples in airflow.

But the other question is whether the combination can USE the additional airflow of the 4500, especially if it isn't as responsive on the track. Only on way to know that for sure...
