Vintage bias ply front tires, 6.70-15 or 7.10-15?? - 01/20/17 05:05 PM

I am about to purchase some bias ply front tires for my '66 Satellite but am having some difficulty deciding what tires/rims I need. I am looking for a combination similar to what the cars would have run "back in the day". I have attached a few photos of what I am looking for. I was initially thinking a 4 1/2" wide wheel with a 7.10-15 tire but after looking at the recommended rim widths for that size, they are recommending a wheel closer to a 5 1/2 minimum width.

What did they run back in the day? A 6.70-15 tire on a 4 1/2" wheel or a 7.10-15 tire on a 5 or 5 1/2" wheel?

Thanks!

Stan

Those are tall tires. The Moroso 7.10 front tire is 28" tall. The 7.60 is 29". I would guesstimate the 6.70 would be about 26". Not tall enough in my opinion.

There are vintage Stahl front runners, 7.10-15 on a 4" wide wheel. These came off an old Roadrunner Super Stocker. I put one on my Duster just for laughs, doesn't even remotely fit. Definitely need to be on a B body. They are REALLY tall for maximum run out.

Repro BFG Silvertowns look the part. Coker Tire sells Pro Trac front runners in various sizes.

I started NHRA Stock class racing in the early 1970s, we ran 7.60.15 Firestones on 5.0 inch wide steelies on our 1968 GTX A/SA Hemi car, we later switch to a set of Fenton 4.0 aluminums wheels. A lot of the other Mopar B bodies ran 8.00x15 and 8.20x15 front tires up scope
I had a set of Stahl 8.20x15 on my 1963 Plymouth Belvedere stocker 415 HP M.W. car, I did have to turn the torsion bar height up a little bit to make them clear and steer better thumbs wrench

Thanks for the replies and photos! I appreciate it.

My brother put a set of 7.10-15's on his '53 Coronet and they seem wider that the Moroso or Stahl 7.10's. If a set of "new" bias ply 7.10'-15's will fit on a 4 1/2" wheel, that is probably the way I will go.

RMCHGR: How wide is the treat pattern on those Stahls that you have?

Thanks.

back in my "nu-be" days, i once ran 7.10x15 b.f.goodrich silvertown's on 15x4 cragar ss wheels on my charger. used 50lbs. air pressure if i remember right. the tread width was only 4 1/4" on those tires.

I used to run these vintage Super Stock Formula 1's before they started drying up too much to be safe at speed.
Wish some reputable company or Coker reproduced them and I'd be first in line.

Other supplier of vintage tall skinny tires for corvettes and thunderbirds. The real reason these tires are made however. But they happen to fit old mopars too.

Coker tires does not seem to have the greatest reputation.

7.10 X 15 bias ply silvertown tires from Coker tire. Nearly 28 inches tall and skinny. Mosher uses these tires all the time.

Few other options. I bought some 7.10x15 Goodyear supercushion tires from Kelsey tires a few years ago. I'm not sure if they still make that particular size, but they look great.

With Firestone 6.70 15's on my 62 Dodge, they hit on one side, barely fit on my 63 Plymouth (as Cab stated). Might want to mock something up before buying.

I used the Pro-Trac Competition Front from Coker Tire size 215/70/15 on my Savoy. They worked and looked well for a strip car but you really wouldn't want to do any cornering with them.
Very small contact patch and they push into the corner. They have a fat sidewall width and a 3" tread width. I'm on the street more now so I replaced them with M/T S/T radials and The car handles better but doesn't look as cool shruggy

I ran the Moroso 7.10 on my street/strip car for 20 years. When I updated the rims I went with the MT fronts to match the ET Streets out back.
They are good in the street and have been 145 mph in the 1/4.

Re: Vintage bias ply front tires, 6.70-15 or 7.10-15?? - 01/23/17 03:54 PM

Thanks for the pictures and information everyone! That helps out a lot. It looks like I am leaning towards a vintage style bias-ply 7.10-15 on a 4 1/2 wide rim. I haven't totally decided on which tire I am going with. I think I like the tires with the slight pie crust edge like the vintage Stahls. I will have to check the different suppliers and see what is out there.

Thanks again!

Check that the speed rating is good for the speed you will go!

And the weight carrying abilities as per the side wall ply.

They ran Bias ply tires back in the day because they didn't have radials. I would not put bias ply tires on anything that is going over 100 mph under any circumstances. JMO.

Re: Vintage bias ply front tires, 6.70-15 or 7.10-15?? - 01/23/17 05:19 PM

My Duster has drag radials on the rear so I put Michelin XZX radials on the front to match. They have the vintage front runner look with radial performance. IMO, they look similar to M/T Sportsman fronts with the rounded edges. These are 165/15 which are about 26" tall. Generally, they are VW or Euro sports car tires but work well as front runners. I think they are 'S' speed rated. Street driving is great with these. No problems over 110 at the track either.

Not so cheap but they are good tires. There are other options/brands for this type of tire that are less expensive.

I do like the bias ply look though. If I had an older car, I would probably run bias ply tires. To me '70-up cars lend themselves better to radials.
