Air cleaner

Air cleaner - 01/06/17 10:44 PM

I need an air cleaner. I have a junk chrome deal now, that needs an adapter. I'm good and sick of it.

So what air cleaner do I need that will fit a 4150, and not kill power? Need it under the hood on a small block with a Strip Dominator.

I like the looks of the K&N with the filter top and I've used K&N filters since sometime in the 70's when they came out, but I don't want to kill any power, or at least limit my loss.

What says MoParts?????????????

How big can you get away with... 14" dia...
how tall.. I will go out to the shop and see
what element I have out there... its rated at
1000 cfm and is 2" tall.. I didnt see that they
offered a 3" but the 2" flows more than the K&M 3"
EDIT
Wix racing... 1000+ cfm

I like the 16" dia. spun aluminum ones that the roundy-round guys use. K&N use to have a nicely shaped 16" base and lid too.

I think with the flat base that is on there now I can only get a 2 inch filter on there. It's not a good filter on there now.

With the right base I think I can go 3 inch by 14 in diameter.

If you go with a high flow element a 2" will
out flow a 3" from most companies.. myself..
I dont care for the drop base units BUT if you
have to then you have to.. but still go with
the high flow element
EDIT
If you go with Wix make sure its a RACE element
for the added flow

WIX has a cfm chart and the 14x3 I use flows around 1000 cfm iirc......

Re: Air cleaner - 01/07/17 12:25 AM

I cannot speak about the Wix race filter because I have not done any true testing. I went from the 2" Wix race to the K&N 4". I went faster with the K&N and now more consistent. Since I have not tried a 4" Wix(not sure if it exists) this cannot be a true comparison. Nonetheless, what that tall K&N filter(w/o oil)will do, is straighten out the air flow and give a better and consistent signal to the carb. Thinking about the K&N stack with filter 5"filter/5" stack. I do not go 200 + mph in the 1/4 but the Pro Stocks do and they use K&N filters to stabilize the air that enters the carbs(pre- 2016).

Wix refers the high flow ones as "Advanced
Performance Filters"... here is a 14" X 3.01"
283-46945R... rated at 1000+ cfm

What I'm putting on my Rampage is a dual snorkel
so I can run tubing forward down to opening in
my fascia... nice big snorkels so I can run a 4"
tube for each side... I have a cowl hood but I
want to pick up the air from the front end

I like WIX 14x3 in both R and non-R depending on the combination. The r2c stuff is my very favorite so far. K&N is the last filter I would use on anything that sees any amount of atmospheric debris.
