Putting together a 484 hemi and have insufficient crankshaft end play. Anybody every grind or sand the number 3 crank bearing to increase end play clearance. Using a new Ohio crank and checks about .002 play when torqued.

Did you smack the crank back and forth with a
dead blow hammer to set the bearings before you
torque the caps

Yes all the time.

Get some fine grit paper on flat surface.

Normally it's just some high spots from manufacturer.

Ive used wet dry 600 or 1000 grit paper with oil. Make sure the surface is true. never had a problem

i'm with mr. p-body on this. i bet the bearing needs to be seated. i have NEVER had to increase thrust bearing clearance... that i remember.

Build enough and sooner or later you have to do a set that way I make sure and use a super flat surface

Sand the front side, not the thrust side.
