tunnel ram with single top

tunnel ram with single top - 11/30/16 02:44 AM

Has anyone tried a tunnel ram with a single top? i currently have a 440-2 intake with the 4150 to 4500 spacer. i already have the indy tunnel ram i thought maybe i could try the tunnel ram with a single carb rather then trying a 3x intake? anyone make a top for the intake or is it something i will have to make?

The motor is a 528 with -1 heads

Thanks, Chris

Tunnel rams with single fours are a terrible idea--they run the end cylinders so lean it is scary--we tried one for grins on our Mopar engine masters deal--they said any cast single 4 so after we did good with our normal set up we tried a tunnel ram single four for one pull--the two front and two rear header pipes went cherry red on the dyno --you can see it in the video
They were crazy lean compared to the others--
They are great swap meet items but no way I would run one

We run a tunnel ram with a single and have been very fast , 4.90 142 mph @ 2900# on 26's 560 inches. Some of the fastest nmca 10.5 tire cars in the nation run one, but mostly big blocks. I think most of the faster cars in 'All motor" in Milan Run them.

528 with 440-1's . You will love the extra power you get from a Indy Tunnel with 2x 4's . This set below is twin 950 TRE's on my 528 and a 547 in the blue valiant

it can and does work well, you have to have a tee-pee top-get the carb up high and a lot of angle/taper from carb pad to the ends of the manifold to get good distribution.

Has to be set up right but can work very well. Very common in Comp Eliminator

The "MAN" on that setup is John Marcella

Charlie Westcott Built ours, all billet.

Like said if the engine is built correctly it will love it. As pointed out many of the NA 10.5 cars run them. Of course they run "cast" intakes that look like they are ready to give birth but they are still "cast" intakes smile

I was just saying the as cast stocker units were a bit sketchy for sure pro set ups work well

Some take the teepee to new heights for sure smile Marcella built Uratchko designed smile Most of these intakes in the class we run just look pregnant, not just the top but the entire intake. How much "cast" they are is always good for some speculation. Some really cool pieces in the NA10.5 ranks for sure. The manifold from the Vette is at Slawko now getting massaged again for the third time in three seasons. Be nice if they did away with the weight penalty for a sheet metal deal as it would be WAY cheaper

It always depends on your intentions of the engine and limits you impose. But as been shown it can work well. Conversly, by the time you retrofit a distribution friendly 'conventional design' TeePee onto that old Weiand intake...your plenum volume will be ....well BIG.

That's the point. The plenum volume is what you are after

Would this be considered the best singal four barrel setup

Re: tunnel ram with single top - 12/03/16 04:47 AM

The tunnel ram with 2 carbs will be faster than a 3x with a single than a tunnel ram with some retrofit (and likely distribution unfriendly) experiment topped on that same tunnel-ram. Unless I am mistaken and this is some comp-eliminator level build. (You are using an adapted-to-4150 manifold now which is not likely the best version of that manifold.) Maybe I'm off? DROP THE MIC! lol
