Does wrapping the headpipes affect 02 sensor readings?

Does wrapping the headpipes affect 02 sensor readings? - 11/15/16 12:15 AM

I have Fast EZ EFI installed on my car, 68 Charger 440, HP manifolds with 2 1/2 TTI exhaust. Will wrapping the head pipes with exhaust wrap cause the 02 sensor to get false readings?

No, just don't create any exhaust leaks upstream of the sensors. They are Not EGTs, the broad band sensors don't work like the old O2 sensors. HTH, Steve

Agree the O2 sensor should be fine. The head pipes, however, may not like the extra heat from the wrap and crack.

Wrapping the headers with asbestos material is an old trick used by racers to help a turbo motor keep the boost up. When I was in high school a good friend got a new Corvair Spyder as a birthday gift (only child, rich parents). He beat on that car like it was a red-headed step child.
At the time Hot Rod had an article about a guy running a Turbo Corvair in the stock class at the drags and we did an experiment. We timed the car from a dead stop on the freeway to 60 and got a number on a stop watch. Then we jacked up the car in my dad's garage, took the exhaust system off the car and wrapped the pipes with asbestos tape that I had dipped in a solution of stuff called "water glass". That made the tape conform to the shape of the pipes. We held it in place with baling wire and put it back together. We ran the test again and it was significantly quicker to 60. The downside to this is that the water glass and asbestos wrap kept the pipes too moist in daily driving and caused the pipes to rot!

I was thinking the same thing years ago about a "cheaper" way w/the wrap but heard horror stories of rotting so I went w/ceramcoat and love it...........
