What MSD for the new engine?

What MSD for the new engine? - 02/13/09 07:02 PM

Well its time to put in a large purchase at summit and i'm just making some final decisions.

I'm wondering what MSD box and Coil i should purchase. My old engine had a Digital 6plus but i know that wont cut it for the new engine.

New engine is a 650ciB1-TS Alchy injection with Rons Dual terminators. I just checked the compression and it is 15.6/1. I talked to MSD and they said the Digital 7 plus would be fine for what i need. What coil would work best, two are recogmended but the only real difference i see is like 50$ between the two. If i can save the $$ i rather.

Remember this is for Truck pulling.

Thanks

Doug

Spend the extra and go with
the HVC-2 coil.
It will take the extra vibs for pulling.

I run a MSD 7AL3 with a pro power coil &crank triger in my boat, the 7AL3 has timing retards and a three step built in,dont know if you could use eather of those features in a pulling truck!

The 7AL2 will do the job as well as th any of the other 7 sereis boxes with the proper coil, the MSD Pro Power, Malloru 28880 or the proper # MSD HVC coil for the digital 7 boxes I have used the early non digital 7 boxes on blown motor using 22 lbs. of boost on race gas at 7300 rpm BTW, you do need good plug wires also

Just a thought, I switched to an MSD 10 box with the digital add on controller from a 7AL3 and it was worth real power on the dyno using ethanol. The ten box has 700 MJ spark power firing 30 degrees rotation, while the 7's have 160 MJ firing only 20 degrees. With the alky, high pressure and high fuel load, they work well. It's hard to blow out the spark if it gets rich, and the extra 10 degrees firing helps with alky too. You can curve them and add all the digital functions with the external controller, but you have to use the modules in the box for the 2 step.

Mopar Performance sells their version of the 7AL for a lot less money than what the MSD version costs. They are the same box, just a different label. The price difference will pay for the coil.

That engine needs a Mag.

Hmmm so it seems like the choice is MSD 10 plus or Digital 7....... I see two MSD 10 plus's with the coil on racing junk for sale for about the same price as a Digital 7 new..... But i dont like buying used things over the net... and i get no warrenty wit hthe used MSD's.....

With the MSD 10 is there anything else special I will need with it?

I'm not into programming things so anything programmable is over my head. For pulling all i really need is the rev limiter.

You can run it as it comes. It has a 2 step built in, but no start retard, and I'd do that.

It's hard on caps, rotors, and wires, but it'll light'm when others will stumble. Not quite a mag, but still an arc welder. Make sure you don't let it bite you, it hurts. The MSD tester kits that come with the ceramic clip on sparky bit you hook to your coil wire to test it will literally melt if you leave it on for long. The box draws something like 25 amps at 8,000RPM so make sure the batts are up.

I personally will never use MSD again.
There is a better unit for the same $$$. Much better quality. I had an MSD Digital 6 and had popping for years before I switched it out. Checked and changed everything. MSD checked the box twice at the track, right in front of me. Bought a new distributor even, wires, etc.
Changed the box to a Crane HI-7 and PS92 Coil.
Problem GONE..

Here is the better choice instead of a Digital 6..
http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail...mp;autoview=sku
Along with a LX92 Coil. $64.00

Just my.. See for yourself..

Also try to find a DEC 9000 or 9500 engine controller and you have a sweet set up.
