Big block nitrous motor suggestions?

Big block nitrous motor suggestions? - 02/09/09 10:20 PM

Hello everyone,I spend the majority of my time over on the truck forum but wanted to post this question over here.
Im getting ready to start building a engine for my truck and would appreciate some input.
Im starting with a standard bore 76 440 block that will clean up nicely at .030.
I will be using 4.25 stroker assembly.
I would like to be in the neighborhood of 550 hp on motor, and occasionally hit it with 100-150 shot.
Im new to the nitrous game and would like to hear some advice and possibly some real world numbers from similar combos.
Street manners are not that important (pump gas would be nice), it sees less than 300 miles a year.
However budget is a concern (hence the nitrous).
This will find its way into a 73 D100 Clubcab narrowed Dana 60,727.
So lets hear some combos what heads, cam, intake?
Thanks in advance.

You said street manners not important but but I'd guess that a 500+ inch motor will make 550hp fairly easy and have great "street manners" to boot, NOS will just be the icing....................

Might want to sign up over at:

moparman63 squirts some N20 with pump gas on occasion.

If you can't afford the parts that will stand up to repeated nitrous use then don't spray it.
A sound shortblock with main studs, aftermarket rods, light pistons strong enough for the juice, proper rings, good head gaskets and maybe head studs will go along way to reaching your goal.Don't skimp on parts here,it may come back to bite you.
550hp should come easy without a lot of rpm as long as you have some good flowing heads.Pump gas should'nt be a problem either.
Sounds like a rockin truck.
I will let the experts chime in on combo advice.

I'd think you could get away w/ a 150 shot w/o too many problems with just about any set-up. As long as it wasn't an every run deal. 500 inch, 590 solid cam, 1.5 roller rockers, headers..what else you got?

Pump gas and the jug is hard on parts.Yes their are cars that do it but alot of time went into these combos.RUN GOOD GAS WHEN YOU SPRAY!!!!!Run a good roller cam with a wide LSA.It will also help with street manners.

Thanks to everyone for the replies.
I agree with not skimping on the bottom end.
My original plan for this truck was to build a 650-700 engine w/o any power adders.
I just dont think I can swing the $$$ for the heads and roller cam it would take to get me there right now.
Can I reach my goal with a set of ported RPMs, a good solid bottem end and a solid lifter cam?
I realize I will need fuel system upgrades and quality ingition system, but they are getting upgraded anyway.
Taking this route would get me on the road alot quicker, and it will very seldom get sprayed.
Thanks for the help.

why don't you boost it? a 871 blower would be an easy bolt on...Plus its full time power and you won't a crazy cam, big stall or tall gears, you won't need $$$$ heads and they look cool. You can drive it whenever and it will only create boost when you waffle it.

Here is a combo I was running, which is similar to what you are doing. My 4050 lbs car ran 12 teens on motor, and 11.30's with a 150 shot which needed to be leaned out. Just open up your ring gaps the appropriate amount, use some good head gaskets and you will be fine. Also, this is a mile high in Denver where the air is thin. If you are closer to sea level, it would easily run 11's at the strip on motor alone.

Engine:
505 Cubic Inches
440 Block +.030
4.25 Stroke Crank
7.1 Rods with 2.2 Journals
11.1:1 Compression (0.040 Quench) (0 deck)
1/2 inch internal oil pickup w/ Milodon 7 Qt. Pan
Comp XS282S Solid Flat Tappet Cam
244/252 @ .050
.555/.576 lift
Indy EZ Heads standard port window
Crane Gold 1.6 Roller Rockers
Holley Street Dominator Intake Manifold
1000 cfm Holley HP by BIGS Performance
Headers Ceramic Coated TTI 1 7/8" to 3 inch collectors

Power Adder:
NOS Plate System
150 HP Nitrous

Trans.:
727 TorqueFlite
Reverse Manual Valve Body
Turbo Action 10" MED Converter 3800 Stall

Rear-end:
Strange Dana 60
Posi w/ 3.73 Gears

Be sure to use good head gaskets for nitrous.

Pump Gas and nitrous, is not that tough, if you know what you are doing. You run everything the same as good gas, you just have to be conservative on the timing. We went easy 8.30s a couple years ago with Donahue Hogans Chevy II, at the pump gas drags. That was with a fogger and a plate, but very mild tunes in both guns.

Not meaning to hijack ...but i'm thinking a long the same line.I have a ? on n20 hope it makes sense..(is there a formula/or a way to determine the actual rpm of a given a mount of spray the engine rpm will increase.so u will no how to gear for the car?)Thax
