Is orange RTV ok for Copper head gaskets? - 02/07/09 03:25 PM

My block is o-ringed and I'm gonna use copper head gaskets, probably Summit brand.

I know it was mentioned that 'The right Stuff' and some RTV's were ok to seal the water jacket holes. I went to NAPA yesterday to buy the right stuff but was not in the mood to pay $21 for the small tube of it. So I bought orange RTV, will this work ok?

Hylomar is the product that was suggested to me for my oringed block. No leaks.

the copper high temp RTV is all i use.

Yamabond, HondaBond, and right stuff are all basically the same thing and way tougher after they dry than RTV.

You can use right stuff for a gasket and it is very tough to get off and with clean dry surfaces it is pretty much never going to leak I have used it for oil pan gaskets and not had them leak at all, also makes great intake end seals.

I used Yamabond on a set of coppers. Its much different that Right Stuff.

I plan to use yamabond again.

Is the Yamabond cheaper than the right stuff? Is it easier to clean off, or the same? Where is it sold?

Like DusterDave said Yamabond is the best way to go. The stuff just flat works.

I use permatex avaition form-a-gasket around the water jackets. I have never used RTV on copper gaskets.

i'll probably cop some crap for this but i use roofing silicon on my gaskets. it's high temp as i use it to coat header gaskets so they can be reused multi times, they seal the water jackets everytime no leaks & best of all a quick rub down with petrol or carb cleaner & they clean up nicely. 2 of my crew are automotive specialists & when i first showed them what i was useing they cringed. but 5 years later they are sold on roofing silicon. 1 of my crew was a hardcore "3 bond" user claiming it was the best(it's like yamabond) but these days i see he's opted for roofing silicon too. and the best part, it's dirt cheap!
deit- just reading the label it says it's good for aluminium, copper, lead & tin & sticks to galvanising & powder coated materials. the price on the tube is $3.99 & thats our $ not usd.

so what have we learned here today kids? absolutely nothing! just make sure you use the sealer of your choice. most will work just fine

1. It really is worth it
2. Stop being cheap.

I used Yamabond on the first 2 Cometic installs I've done, both with fresh aluminum heads. 1st one was sloppy, but it didn't leak (on a BB). Second one was neater but it leaked (on a SB). I'm... not going to be using that stuff again, it's really nasty to work with and hard to apply properly. The time it takes to properly apply it to all 4 surfaces of the head, gasket and block causes it to dry significantly in my experience. It's like working with a runny salt-water taffy .

Props to all that use it successfully, too much of a pain for me though .

here is 1 tip for all aplications.use sparingly around the oil holes to the head or it will get blocked or the plug will get pushed into the valvetrain and block oiling there.i hope you wont have to pull the heads to redo things.it is a bummer.

3bond makes yamabond and hondabond, it's all the same stuff. I've used it for years to seal the engine cases on harleys (no gasket, crappy machining) I seemed to have the only bikes that didn't "mark their spot". It works but you better be sure you put it where you want it 'cuz it's not easy to remove. I personally realy like hylomar....
