rpm sensor for torqueflite /dana 60 combo?

Where the heck do you put the pickup and magnet collar on a car with a TF and Dana 60? While trying to set up the drive shaft rpm sensor and pickup, I found that the slip yoke moves a lot more than I thought it would. Up to 3/8+ inch. I don't think it will provide a signal being that far out of line during some of the run. There is no room on the rear, and the slip yoke moves back and forth due to suspension travel, enough to move the magnets out of line with the pickup during launch for sure, and maybe other points of the run.
My driveshaft is three inch diameter, and at this point it looks like my only option, if my current setup fails to work, is to mount magnets on the driveshaft tube and put the sensor bracket on the ladderbar beside it. Anybody else have a better solution? will post pics in a few minutes

If the data collection module you are connecting to has an option to configure what type of input it receives, you could use the speedometer drive on the transmission. Simply screw on a unit like this:

Wire it in and calibrate.

That would be a great solution. I am going to call RPM performance and see what they say.

I welded a boss to the tailshaft right at the park gear, and then threaded a hall effect sensor in.

Park gear is perfect "teeth" to use for this kind of sensor. Not sure how good the accuracy is on those speed senders from SummitRacing, but I know with mine I can see some VERY fine information (like each individual tooth), which has been really helpful reviewing suspension/shock/launch changes.

I put it on the rear end... the circle part mount yoke and the pick up mounts on the diff housing..that way there is no change
in angle as the drive shaft moves up and down... if you have the
holes for a snubber the pick up bolts right on

I see another possibility, using your idea. I could drill a collar from RPM to bolt up where the governor is, and weld on a boss for the standard RPM sensor. Slick!

Mike, no room for the collar on the 60, maybe I have a different yoke on the diff than you .

They also make collars that mount right on the dana..

Yes you can get accurate converter slippage, but honestly being able to watch driveshaft speed on the launch has been a much more valuable piece of data for me.

Looks good, Mike. At this point, I am waiting for the right guy to get back from lunch at RPM to help with this. From the examples so far, the easiest solution would be a double collar where I have it now, next easiest would be put it in the tailshaft where the governor bolts up and weld a boss on it.
If I need to go to the rear , I will need both a collar and a new cable.

They have collars to fit any yoke on a dana.. as for
the cable you can just cut it and lengthen it

The thing I like about the park gear deal is that it has 18 teeth on it, which gives it a LOT of data points to pick up vs. just 2 or 4 magnets. Like I said doesn't mean much down track at 6000 RPM, but at the hit when it's only moving 10rpm it means a lot.

Update: Randy at RPM figures it should work with up to a 1/2 inch travel. Second option is dual magnets, which is easiest to do next. Just bolt another collar to the first one with the magnets side by side. For starters I will put it on the edge at rest like in the first photo and it should be in range the whole run. Now if my new cam shows up tomorrow like FedEx says, I can finally start putting the motor together and in the car for a test.

Not a great pic , but with help from a guy I work with that owns a lathe we came up with this on our 66 . The sensor bolts on where the snubber goes. Hopefully when we get the motor in the car here shortly this will all work the way it's supposed too.

It's a Torqueflight, cant you just bolt in a factory vss? Or do you have an aftermarket output shaft?
Does your logger accept mag sensors, or only digital? Factory vss is mag.

Also want to note here that I wont do another T/F without adding in that bung at the park wheel... Awesome idea.

My drive shaft rpm sensor is a somewhat like yours Greg. My bracket bolts onto the tail housing of my 904. The movement usually doesn't bother my readings. I really like the dana yoke mount and may try to do something like that on my new Daytona

I was reminded that a fourlink, having a longer instant center, will move the front yoke much less than a ladderbar car. So what we are doing ought to work great on a fourlink car.
