440 Camshaft selection and still keep power brakes. - 04/25/16 05:21 PM

I got a guy wanting a camshaft that makes some noise but still produces enough vacuum to work his power brakes. Not looking for best all out performance cam, His car is used more for cruising and car shows. Any recommendations much appreciated. Thanks!

You'd have to look at the specs and see which one would be better for the particular combo, but something like either of these two Howard's cams would work:
720141-12, or 721161-12
The first one(the smaller one) is probably the safer choice.

Less than 230 duration @ .050 and an LSA of 112 or more.
And verify compression. The less he has, the less you want the duration to be.

Sounds like one of the hughes whiplash cams would be right up his alley.

Crower 271HDP 224/232 @.050 112 centers in at 107 is a perfect hotter but not-too-hot 440 six pack replacement cam works great with power brakes, I'm assuming you'll have at least 9:1 CR?

This came up before I think it's very close to Fast68's Howards grind.

The old General Kinetics grind that SSI Industries (PAW) and Summit sells as their 'House Grind' is also very close to these specs too, a little lower lift (maybe .465?). Cheap (still under $100 IIRC)

If he wants "oooh look at me!!" sound with decent drivability, look for a Comp Thumper with similar to slightly smaller intake durations @ .050, they use a big slow exhaust ramp that sounds good (sounds like a bigger overlap cam) but is very docile.....Chevy poser boyz like them a lot, lol.

I had a Mopar .484 cam in my old 440, car ran and sounded good. It had power brakes and steering. Recently put a Whiplash cam in my dads Roadrunner, big mistake.

What do you not like about the Whiplash? 383 or 440?
