Fastest (quickest) A-833 4 speed's out there. - 02/03/09 02:34 PM

Kinda bored, and I got to thinking....wonder what kind of ET's / MPH / Weight guys are running with the good ole A-833 trans. Obviously I'm putting one in my ride, and it won't be any quicker than it is now, but I'm curious to know how fast some guys have gone with the stock trans.

My friend Kenny (sgcuda) went 9.90s in his 70 cuda at about 2900-3000 pounds. He's about to go a lot faster than that w/ it later this year. He has to try and catch me anyway. CHIP

Wow! Nice numbers. I hope to just maintain a low 11 at 3300 lbs with my stock 4spd trans.

I broke 3 A-833 tranny's back in the 1978 to 1982 era when I bracket raced a 340 Dart. It ran a best of 11.90's @ 113 and like I said I broke 3 stock 4-speeds. I was hard on them as the pedal was on the floor when the clutch came out and it stayed on the floor until I lifted after the traps. I loved racing a 4-speed but I am glad my heavy 63 is an auto as I know I would break stock 4-speeds if it had a stick in it. Ron

Just curious were those the cast iron or aluminum housing?

Making the A-833 live while racing is all in the clutch. Period. It has less to do with weight, and ET then it does with clutch setup. i broke plenty of stuff in mine with a stock type clutch. Once I went with a Soft Lok the parts breakage stopped.

Re: Fastest (quickest) A-833 4 speed's out there. - 02/04/09 02:32 PM

Interesting stuff....

My main source of info is my dad, who's been doing this for 40+ years on the same car. His 23 spine trans doesn't have any go fast parts in it (regular syncros). He's never broken a trans part ever. That's using a non-slipper clutch (Centerforce Dual Friction). He relys on the tires to spin at the line a few revolutions, and he powershifts every gear all the time at 3900lbs and runs mid 11's. Very impressive!!!!!

I hope to have the same "LUCK".

My clutch will probably grab even harder than his but I'm about 600lbs lighter. Same stock type 23 spline trans.

I'm sure the clutch is a killer on these, as is the tires not slipping. If things don't slip, the week link will be found. That being said, I plan on having a FUN street car to play with at the track a couple times a year.

I really can't wait to get this thing together!!!!!!!!

I wonder what kind of clutch setup Herb's car had? Did it slip or did the tires spin when racing? I'm sure the trans was a crash box and not a dual purpose trans (street).

Keep the info coming guys!

Herb was a big fan of the plain old organic rag discs until the adjustable plate came out as i recall.
Dont know what was in the car back then or longevity issues.
Agree would be great to know how it was actually done back then first hand.

I just had Tim Hyatt build a clutch for a street strip Dart. He modified the B&B Pressure plate so it is adjustable and used a sintered iron disk. Looks real nice.

Reduce the base pressure at the track and increase it for the drive home.

I'm going with a McLeod RST Street Twin with organic disks. I don't know of any mopars running this newer type of clutch, but a bunch of Mustang and LS1 guys are loving it. Very much a dual purpose clutch. They are raving about the street driving manners and super light pedal. At the track, it's rated to 800hp and doesn't slip at all. Hopefully it doesn't find the week link either. I'm hoping this is a good fit for my car.

Tim is supposed to be the man for race clutches!

I`m still kicking around the clutch choice for my GTX,how hard does a "street-twin" hit compared to a Centerforce DF?
As far as durability on an 833,just like evertything else "your mileage may vary"

A street-twin is very harsh. When I tried a street-twin, it took out 3rd gear on THE FIRST PASS, my trans had just been rebuilt and pro-shifted by Liberty (15 passes on rebuild).

Try calling Tim Hyatt, he is a great guy and is in N.E. Ohio. 440-254-1311

There is the Old School Street Twin "Original" that uses a B&B design pressure plate. That thing is a monster, good to over 1200hp or something like that.

McLeod had developed a softer version of that. Still a twin clutch, but smaller diameter, can use stock flywheel, and is a diaphram pressure plate with a super low 1800lbs!...compared to a Centerforce DF of around 3400lbs. These are the RST and RXT street twins. RST is all organic disc and good to 800hp and the RXT has dual friction material and is good to 1000hp. Both are diaphram and super low pedal pressure. They are supposed to hold like mad, but super nice engagement,....very smooth!!!! I hope my RST doesn't break stuff.

I just looked it up. Is it # 6913-05? It says for 140 tooth flywheel and 800 hp. Jegs $719.

Re: Fastest (quickest) A-833 4 speed's out there. - 02/06/09 02:24 PM

Can't recall,...look up their website, but mine is #6913-02 is the 23 spline unit for 130 tooth flywheel.

I spoke to their tech line the other day, because my disks fit pretty loose on the input shaft. The tech person is the guy that designed this clutch. He said it's fine and is supposed to be very loose to give great disengagement features, and not to worry. He has the same clutch in his 57 chevy with big hp, and he can push this clutch in with his hand very easily, no effort. He also said it doesn't have the ON / OFF feature. It is a great STREET clutch that can take the hp at the track. It's not a RACE clutch.
