I'd like to know what happened to #74 which was delivered to Nick Califato in PA. Last anyone heard, it was sitting in a bank reposession lot with a 383 in it around 1966-67.

I was told that there where 50 Dodge and 50 Plymouth A90 cars made total
Was it possibly 50 automatic cars and 50 stick shift cars of each brand?
Does any one really know

102 Plymouths and 101 Dodges according to Darrell Davis.
90 Plymouths were automatics, 12 were 4-speeds.

Actually NASCAR required 500 body units to be built, irregardless of the engine type, to be legal for competition. With NHRA 50 of the specific car (A990) had to be built to be legal for competition, which in some cases, led to some "creative" bookkeeping. But I know what you meant...

RO (Plymouth) & WO (Dodge) is the body designation. I think of the 200-odd that were supposedly made, only 350 survive...

My question is...Chrysler boycotted the 1965 season in NASCAR and I believe '65 was the first year for the 500 unit requirement..so it didn't apply to Chrysler because of the boycott..right? Chrysler just built the drag versions.

Jake, I didn't realize your brother owned this car. I spent a lot of time with Doug, Sam & Harold Hurley and actualy lived in Grundy, VA. for 4 years. After Barnett, Dean Nicoloplis built their motors and was very close with them when Doug passed away. Dave Mosley did their suspension work. Larry Riffe and Tank Crosswhite got most of the stuff including cars, parts, trucks & trailers.

I spoke with Craig at the hemi reunion and he said one was a clone, but I think he did say they had another they were not racing that might have been an orginal. I looked at the two they had there and one was an orginal. At one time Bill Weakley raced one of their cars very succcessfuly as well as Clyde Sutton in the Sutton, Newman & Lambert orange and white car. probably the same car.

It would be nice if we could get more history on this car. It is realy in good condition and my brother realy spent some time detailing it out for being a race car.

Do you remember the 65 Plymouth Larry Hice raced? He lived in Chilicothie (sic??). Craig said he only remembers Hice in a Camaro but he was killer at Riverside in the Plymouth in the early 70's. Speaking of the Iowa car, there was a photo on an old thread of a car on an open trailer with snow and dirt all over it. It had the Classic Blue 'Dodge Material" paint less lettering. No doubt it was one of their cars they had sold.

Hey ChrisF from BC
Any chance that "Hemi Express" is the same "Hemi Express" that Jim Clark had in the late 60s early 70s out of Baldwin Park, CA. He had a shop called Engine Dynamics and a bunch of Max Wedges running out of his ship. I met his son Brian Clark a couple weekends ago at Fontana. Jim later went on to a 68 Dart and finally a Demon in Pro Stock.
I totally dug that dark blue 65 with a locomotive on the door and "Hemi Express" logo.

He sold it to someone in Maryland in 1966. Thinks it was turned into A/FX Altered Wheelbase. Anyone remember this car???? The best story of this car was he drove this car from Boch Dodge to Vermont 200 miles with open headers and 4.56 gears.

It was raced in Maryland in the 70's by Gene Barnhart and Tom Clise. I'm pretty sure Clise had it first, and sold it to Barnhart. Where's it now?

Re: 65 A990 Cars Where Are They Now ? - 03/19/10 02:59 AM
My next door neighbor bought a solid red 64 aluminum hemi Plymouth from Veron Rowley out of Maryland in the late 70's. The car went through Englehart and was in Kentucky as of 2008. I believe the car in the above photo is a 64 rather than a 65. If it had aluminum I am sure it would be a 64. The 64's were not A990 cars.

How about the late Dale Mineer's "Miss Coronet?" I remember seeing that car around 1997-8 at the MMCI show at Quaker City and couldn't believe how hideous the paint job was, lol. The more and more I think about that car though nowadays, I like it.

Dale's son still has the Coronet. He raced it at the Clay City Mopar meet last October. SAME PAINT!! Some chassis work was done in Kenova many, many years ago by Dave Mosley and Rich Hedrick on that car. Kinda hard to forget that paint job.

Gene Barnhart sold that car to a guy, I believe from the west coast in the 1990's. He intended to sell just the car, but the guy liked what he had and ended up buying all his hemi stuff (and he had a bunch). I think he had more than one car and he sold all of it to the same guy. I thought the car pictured was a 64 Belvedere with a single headlight grill, not a 65, but I could be wrong (or maybe he had two cars).

We got the car from Robin in 1996 according to the bill of sale. I'm trying to piece together that car's history a little bit better since we're in the process of selling it.
I've got a bill of sale from Robin Pellisier to Harry dated 5/17/96. I've got another bill of sale dated 4/23/87 that lists Anatoli Polewik of Ford Dodge, IA as the owner. Previous owner is shown as a Larry Wikoff from Washington, IA. Looks like a gentlemen by the name of David A Zeisser (sp? Can't read the handwriting) bought it from Polewik. I don't know any of the car's history in the years between Mr. Wikoff and the dealership.
I also have a couple of old timeslips (10.1's @ 132) that show car #5554. Anyone know who that might have been?
I also have the window sticker for the car. Was originally sold by McMahon Motors in Rawlins, WY. VIN# R051185655 on all documentation. Same # on the door jam.
We sold the "Hemi Countdown" (the one Harry bought new in '65) to Mark Vieira in '06 or '07, I don't remember which. Mark did a great job restoring the car to the way it looked in '65. It still is tubbed and has a chromoly cage, but paint scheme is exactly how it was campaigned in the '60's. Last I saw, it was for sale on the DuPont Registry website for $150k.
I'd love to strike it rich and buy both the cars and the "Hemi Countdown II" Dart now owned by a collector in NY. Nothing would make me happier than to own all of my grandfather's ex-racecars.

Hi Jared,
The car you guys have now is John Wilson's(Div 5 racer) first 65 Hemi Car before he purchased the Gruber/Kaase car. Wikoff got it from Jay Smith(Ironjay here on moparts), who raced it with John. Car was Don Ness chassis car at that time. When my dad(Anatoli aka Toli) had it he ran with a Tim Richards motor. I can't remember who John got it from(told me but brain fart right now).
Tell your Grandfather hi from us, probably doesn't remember us, but Toli and I met him when I purchased the Jenkins family 70 Cuda a few years back. They were nice enough to let us stop at Harry's shop and see all the great stuff going on.
FYI,
Alex Polewik

How bout Virginia's Dave Lewis's 65 (Big Red) that he got new? I have the original top end of the motor, wondering where the rest of the car is?
I see Pee Wee Walance's car pictured and that is here restored locally.
I think Herb McCandless got one to but was later destroyed.

There was another Hemi 65 ran out at Richmond Dragway here in Va. called "Rat Trap" by Cline Automotive 40 years ago that was supposedly a 990 car?

The original Black Arrow 65 RO Hemi Plymouth super-stocker was later modified into an AWB car, and after a hard life of racing I heard that it was crushed!

Just got off the phone with my grandfather. Asked him if he remembered the Nick Serpa car and his answer was "Yeah...that's our car" (meaning "The Hemi Countdown" currently owned by Mark Vieira which grandpa purchased new in '65).
I had no idea!

Back in 1965, there were 3 A990's running out of Ray Christian's Garage in Harrisburg,Ohio. The "Apex" The "Daring Dodge" and a Plymouth. What happened to those 3 cars? I remember Ray telling me he won 80 straight races with one of the Dodges. Ray was the man that had his fingers on many cars in a large radius of his shop. There are some great stories about him.

Alex,
Was the car that Harry has red when John had it or was it brown? I have a picture from Brainerd back in the seventies that has my dad's chevelle wagon next to a red hemi with #5554.

The Dictater was a dark brown(maybe) and driven by Slim Howard. I have a photo of it somewhere.

Hi guys. We have a 1965 a990 Dodge Coronet, that we are selling for a good customer. It is now restored very much back to as delivered from the dealership condition, but for a few items. It was sold New at Cicero Dodge in New York and is in both Galen’s Registry as #06 of 53 when registered and #18 Darrel Davis’ book. The VIn is W051194278. We know that it was painted a medium blue prior, but do not have any race history. Seeking any info on the car. Thanks in advance.

There was a car called the Hurricane owned by Dave Cain, out of a Chrysler dealer in Massachusetts. Mike Riefer in Owensville Missouri has it in his car collection now, and I helped David Cain the orginal owners son who now lives in Kansas City build a clone car to race in nostalgia super stock. last winter.

One of the nicest guys I've ever met, "Happy Harry" Holton has one that's currently for sale. Not sure of the history of that car, except Harry got it from Robin Pellesier (sp) in the late 90's (??) Another, that be bought brandy new in 65 is now onwed and has been restored by Mark Viera in Turlock, CA I believe.
Hopefully Julie or Jared will correct mf if I'm wrong...
I realize this is a 10 year old thread but I will answer it anyway. I don't have that much to add. I believe Dave Zizzet (misspelling, but I believe phonetically correct) bought it from Toli. I knew Robin and he wanted me to go up to St Louis to pick up the car for him and bring it back to Arkansas until he could come and get it. The date was Super Bowl Sunday whatever year the Giants won. When I got there, it wouldn't have impressed a normal person, but to me, a 65 guy, it was a wow. Not that it looked good really, but it was a near virgin 65 with window sticker and one cheap coat of red paint over the original Sea Foam Green. To a guy like me, it was a wow. I begged Robin to go find another car to cut up (he wanted to go Super Stock racing) but he wouldn't listen and made a race car out of it. Years later, when I was shopping for a 65 to play with, Harry and I talked several times. I made him a very good offer. The last time we talked he said how many years it had been since he raced it, and then he said "I know I'm never going to race it again" and then there was a long silence. This is usually the point where the seller says come and get it. But he didn't.
