TC too tight?

TC too tight? - 12/26/15 08:16 PM

Hey guys looking for a little help on my street/strip truck

Currently I'm running a 9.5" PTC that flashes 3900 or so. Shift at 5500, fall back is around 1300.

Motor is a mild 440, 727, D60 with 4.10s, 28.5x9 slick, truck weighs 3800lb with me in it. Best So far is 7.66 @ 88.

I am looking to make some changes over the winter:
I will be swapping the .502/.511 236/242 @ 0.05" cam to a .555/.555 260/260 @ 0.05" cam
And the I'll be swapping the Street Dominator for a Victor

I'm thinking the TC is a little tight for my application? Is there ET to be gained going looser?

Video of the truck:

Any advise is appreciated!

With the new cam the vert will be a little tight but not to bad. A 4800 stall vert would be quicker. Also, with the weight of that truck I would stick with the street dominator intake vs the victor if you Don't change the vert. If you do the vert change the victor will be fine.

PTC should be able to loosen that vert up for you.

Thanks for the input!

I will definitely be making one change at a time starting with the cam. From there I can test the intake and see what happens to the stall.

4800 was the number I had in the back of my head as well. Based on dyno numbers from similar 440 builds peak torque seems to fall around 4500 give or take.

My only concern would it be too much for the occasional cruise on the street? I'm thinking no...

I ran a 5,200 RPM converter on the street. As long as you have a GOOD trans cooler and don't make it a daily driver you will be fine. The biggest issue (at least for me) was the MPG or lack of. Gets expensive quick when you are running race gas and a race converter on the street. But yes, you could cruise it with the 4,800.

Been running an 8" 5000+ Continental vert on the streets for 10+ years w/a GOOD B&M cooler bypassing the radiator and trans never gets over 180 even in 112+ Vegas heat on the fwy.........

Best of a 1.636 in great air and fresh slicks.

That 60 ft. is inline with your ET that you run now with your current combo. That wont be the case with the new cams duration of 260 @ .050 vs 236 @ .050 with the current cam. Im assuming the 236 @ .050 is hyd.

Cams are solid sir.

.Even the current 236* @ .050 is solid, that's uncommon for the most part, being that small.

Both cams being solids make them act about 10* smaller @ .050 then their advertised numbers with lash. So that will make a lessor stall vert more versatile with your combo. Still ,I would go with a tight vert around 4800 to 5200 max.

I appreciate the help. I will get the cam in it over the winter and see how it effects the stall - then decide how much to loosen it. I agree that 4800 is about what I want to shoot for in the end.

Basically I'm just trying to wring some numbers out of this combo by sorting it out. Its cheaper than building a bigger engine!
